Tea pot or four barrel

Tea pot or four barrel
I have found the numbers on my y motor and I think it is a 272 that said I am thinking of just using the motor for now with some mods to get by with until I can build a big y motor . Should I have the teapot rebuilt for $248 or should I look for a 4 barrel carb and a new intake manifold, think of putting on dual exhaust . Would I need a hotter cam with the bigger carb?

It depends what you want to spend right now. The tea pot will move it down the road fine. A new intake, carb, and distributor to match the carb will be maybe a couple hundred north or south of $700.00 depending on how you do it. You do not need another cam with the new stuff. Don't over carb it. A 390 or 465 will be just fine on a stock, smaller displacement engine - that's not necessarily "bigger" than the tea pot.

I read that getting my old Distriburor out could by or is a pain in the butt !I take it that the reason for needing to change it is do to the vacuum ?

Yes, the '56 and older are vacuum advance only. The Load-o-matic distributor was designed to work with the vacuum signals of the "Teapot" (or similar era 2 barrels). The Load-o-matic will not work properly with the newer carb's vacuum, hence you need to install a later distributor ('57 and newer). The newer distributors have both vacuum and mechanical advance.
Your distributor MAY be stuck in and MAY require some soaking and gentle persuasion to free up. Have you tried moving it? If it moves it should come right out.

If I go with a new manifold, carb and distributor ,there is no need for a bigger cam if the carb is a 4 barrel ?

No you don't need a cam if you are just doing normal driving. I don't know what your plans are for a "big Y" that you stated in your first post but you could get a carb you are planning for that engine and run it on the 272.
