Flowmaster vs Roush for my 5.0?

The Mods are starting. I've got Roush extreme on my Mustang and it's real loud; but no problem, I don't even listen to radio etc when driving.

My wife wants loud on the new F150, I can do Roush Cat Back, but I've heard a few stories about drone, etc. (I've got a little drone in the Stang, but I don't care; don't want it in the truck)

Or, there is a local guy here in DFW that will install Flowmaster 40 with Duals out to 3" tips. He does great work and the price is under 400.00. He will also delete the Resonator.

Thanks for your advice, experience with either set up.

I think the flowmaster I wanted wasn't stainless and with the winter weather around here I decided to go with the stainless magnaflow. No regrets.

Flowmaster uses old technology that has been far surpassed in performance by other companies. It's like buying an antique. I would look elsewhere.

Flowmaster is also legendary for rusting out early. Don't know if that is still an issue or not (but it sure was in the past!).

My installer told me (and he likes Flowmaster)that we would get drone @38 and 60 mph. He is recommending a 14" magnaflow 14" SIDO.

I love magnaflow! Not overly loud, unless you stomp on it, which is fun every now and then

I've 10 series Flows on my 5.0L FX4, I also had the resonator removed...Its LOUD, not gonna lie and it does drone some, but its not unbearble. I can still hear the radio easily when crusing down the highway or driving normal around town.

As far as the issue of Flowmaster's rusting out early, I've always heard about this but yet to experience it personally. I had a 1990 Ford F-150 5.0L back in highschool and I ran Flowmaster 40's on it for four years and they didn't have a spec of rust on them when I traded it off.

I researched for my 5.0 and decided on Solo.
Solo Performance 5.0 MR400 Exhaust Review - Ford F150 Forum - Community of Ford Truck Fans

Then I saw the Atlas concept and think I may pass on the exhaust and wait to trade-in on the new 2015 F150. The Atlas had dual exhaust. Save all my pennies for the revised model. Atlas: http://www.f150forum.com/f38/ford-at...n-f150-189977/

14" Magnaflow is what I have but my resonator is still in place. Anything larger is waay too quiet IMO. Wouldn't mind it being a tad louder but worried if i eliminated the res. it might be too loud for a daily driver. If you decide to remove it do me and others a favor and post the sound! Thanks

That Solo system with the "J" pipes. I went to their site and pulled up the video with the Challenger V6, why would anyone want a Challenger that sounds likes an Accord with a fart can? The company should be shot to allow that.
I never did find anything there that described the "J" pipe concept. It looked like somehow exhaust was redirected forward under the car, yeah, that's good. Has anyone actually used this on a 5.0??

Those J pipes were supposed to help with drone on the Camero as well. Here is a picture of the pipes...odd configuration for sure!

Sorta looks like an adjustable cutout thing. Are those some sort of valving on the "J" pipes? But being on the downstream side of any type of silencer, I just don't get it. Plus, it looks like it's dumping exhaust gas under the car. Not a good thing unless you're into CO poisoning!

Wow, I know I'm missing something here, just have to be!!

WAIT!!!! I've got it!!! It's a mechanism using the venturi effect, that's it!!! It sucks air in thereby reducing drone!!!! It has to be!!!!!LOL
Some peoples kids!!!!!

I think the ends of the J tubes are capped. Length is probably tuned for cancellation of certain sound waves.

Seems like it would be prone to collecting water and rusting from the inside out. Either way, it doubles the amount of material in the exhaust and I'll bet the price reflects that.

78,

I did remove the Resonator. Made a difference in the db for sure. My wife wanted loud and I was sure after hearing the Magna w/resonator, she would be sending me back to the shop to take it off.

It gets a little loud in the cabin, but nothing unbearable. I'm sure the 3 1/2" pipes help also. I will post video as soon as I'm able.

As a DD, I don't think it would be bad; that being said, I'm 62; have rock n roll ears and some people complain that our P&W band at church is too loud!! Doesn't bother me. We drive the truck daily. Once you get to cruising speed, no problem; it's the getting there that you can really hear the 5.0.

Hope this helps.

ps. I offered to my wife tonight, that I would get a Dynamax Bullet installed as a resonator. Her reply: Why??

Ding ding! I would think it would collect after too but the heat of the exhaust would evaporate anything in the pipe I would imagine. I have seen performance exhaust systems that have a similar tube protruding to try and accomplish the same thing. Here is one of them. I guess it is the exhaust resonator.
