Highboy Rear Fuel Tanks
#61
I am in the middle of a restoration of my 1977 F250 highboy and will need a new fuel tank. I have seen all of the work arounds and every one of them required custom fabrication, whether it be to the truck or the tank.
The primary design challenge is a result of the location of the cross member between the shackles on the rear frame.
My intent is to break the cycle and have a bolt in kit made and availablefrom a retailer.

My question goes to all of the truck owners who still have a gas tank in their cabs due to this issue. If I can get a company to build a kit, how many of you would seriously be willing to purchase one?

first i realize this is an old thread but i wanted to know, Buck how is the clearance at the front of the tank form aero? i ask because i'm working on a gooseneck hitch setup for my 74 and would like to run that tank but the hitch is kinda more important to me, so does the tank come farther forward than the diff?

So reading this thread has confused me lol. Are y'all saying highboys never came with a spare tank or never even came with the bed cover? I have a 74 with the in cab tank, but behind the wheel well I have the square lid that leads to nothing. Has the bed been replaced? Or did they just have a blank fuel filler cover?

Good afternoon.
So has anybody done the aerotanks 32 gallon with success? I'm thinking about buying it but I'm a little skeptical (no skills) about moving crossmembers and what not. According to the rep I emailed (I got the same drawing sent to me) if I were to purchase the tank, sender, and fill kit the only thing I would have to do is modify an opening somewhere to fill it.
Is this true? Would the gauge show an accurate portrayal of what was in the tank?
Sorry, I'm new. I didn't want to start a new post so I drudged this one up. I'm currently installing a new 21 circuit wiring harness in my 76 after patching a few things to get it inspected and titled.

I went with the Aero tanks in my Crew Cab. It turned out really nice. See my build for more details (page 3).
I'm having a little trouble with the fuel gauge, but I probably just messed up installing. The only issue is clearance is a little tight for the filler hose, but I still got it squeezed in there.

I read your build. Hell of a tale! Your truck looks great. Thanks for the info on the tank. I'm gonna get the same tank maybe next month. Hopefully I won't have any difficulty with it. While the bed is off and the old tank is coming out I'll probably change out all the cab mount bushings and fix the parking brake (passenger side has a seized cable). Might as well redo the rear drums while I'm at it.
Lots to do but not nearly as much as you've gone through. I'll remember that when I'm throwing wrenches across the garage!

Thanks! Be careful of the statement "while I'm at it". That's how a simple weekend job turns into a several year frame off restoration costing thousands of dollars
