Windshield wiper and washer problem

Hi all, hoping to get some help with this issue.
I bought a 2004 F250 4x4 this week and the windshield wipers don't work. When I turn them on, they act like they want to move but don't go very far, and the washer sprays continually until I turn the switch off. During this time, the wiper arms move part way, then stop and won't start again until I turn the switch offand back on.

It seems like maybe a bad switch or relay, and I'm hoping someone has seen it before so I can get it fixed.

Thanks

I'd check all the control arms then the wiper motor. Make sure all mechanical connections are ok first.

They are mechanically sound. When I turn on the switch, the arms will start to move and I can hear the motor running. Also I can pull the arms and move them with the switch on, but not when its off, which tells me that the motor is engaged.

Had a similar problem with mine. Turned out to be the plug in connection under the cowl piece.

Was the plug loose or did you have to replace it?

Actually put a plastic shim on inside the plug to keep contact. Meant as a temporary fix but it has lested at least 6 months, knock on wood. I had forgotten about it until I read your post.
