'52 F-1 / '70 240 swap
Hi. New to the column but have lots of miles on the old body (mine).
I'm dropping a 70 model 240 cid/transmission into my 52 F-1. I'm trying to get ahead of the game.
I could use ANY suggestions regarding making the clutch throwout arm work properly.
Does this require a hydraulic set-up? Appears to be so to me. I have no experience with hydraulic set ups. Consider me ignorant. Reach out and learn me some things, please!!!

Tom, welcome to the forum. I have that series engine, only the 300 on my list of a possible transplant into my F4. I will probably go with an automatic to simplify the installation, avoid the clutch problems. My guess is you will be building some brackets for the cylinders. I really can't offer any suggestions for the clutch set up but if nothing else after four hours this needs a bump back up where someone may see it.

Thanks, ray.
I'm going to stick with the three speed. Still looking for any photos, diagrams, etc. on hooking up the throwout arm.
OR if anyone knows of a way to hook up the original 52 three speed to the 240 A quick glance says it is not possible with the current bell housing.
C'mon Answers!!!!

Find an adapter bell housing to bolt a small block Ford V8 to an early Ford 3 speed transmission. You have to be careful because two versions of these were made, one for the earlier bolt pattern (5 bolt I think) small blocks and one for the later (6 bolt I think) small blocks.
The 240 / 300 six block uses the later Ford small block bolt pattern at the back.
an example of an adapter bell housing is here (but no longer available):Small Block Ford to Flathead Transmission adapter - The Ford Barn

I have never seen a SBF to Flathead adapter before. I've looked and none are in current production, that I can find. You can get them off the shelf for an Olds, Pontiac, Caddy, or Chevy engine to the stock 3-sp, but not a SBF as far as I can tell. Is your donor engine's clutch hydraulic? That would make things easier. Good luck!

Ross, I really can't answer the q. about the hyd clutch, but it looks like Bill has the answer for us. That said, I guess I will have to make a trip to Roswell after the holidays and take a look at the donor truck if it is still there. I was not present when the engine was pulled. All I can tell you is that the throwout arm as a little dimple near the end. Duh. Sorry to be so unenlightened.
Don't suppose the number dummy could direct me to an exploded parts diagram of the clutch and throwout arm??????
Thanks, to both!!

1964/72 Ford Truck Parts Catalog available on a CD from hipoparts.com / Which exploded view of the whole shebang would you like?
1965/66 F100/250 2WD - Illustration Section 75, Page 25 / 1967/68 F100/350 - Illustration Section 75, Page 13 / 1969/72 F100/350 - Illustration Section 75, Page 21.
Fordification.com has this same CD catalog available on their website. Why FTE doesn't, I dunno. It certainly isn't for lack of trying on my part.

The nice thing about the adapter is you do no work on your clutch linkage. Since the clutch setup is part of the front of the stock transmission all you have to worry about is finding a clutch disk with the splines you need.
I'd join the Ford Barn and the HAMB and start putting out the request for one of these. Maybe one will pop up before you go to install your engine.

38, Thanks for the tip. Actually, that is what I 'm looking for. I would like to NOT have to modify my pedals or linkage. If I use the 52 tranny and the adapter it should go together pretty easily. My thinking at first was to use the engine and tranny out of the 70 as they were mated from the factory, but I am now leaning toward the 70 engine against the 52 tranny. I'll check out Ford Barn and HAMB.
