Post up the numbers from the data plate and someone will tell what it was originally.

I know this might sound like a strange question.. Why? I mean, there is no such thing in this vehicle series as "numbers matching" The only reason I would even consider going back to original is if the truck is a SUPREME example of a truck. Otherwise, I'd look for the best performance and ease of maintenance given your budget and skill level.

The closest you'll get to numbers matching is being period correct. With very few exceptions, like the K-Code 65 Mustangs and its other K-code brethren, no VINs were stamped on engine blocks and heads. Being period correct is equipping it with date-coded castings and parts that would have been installed on your rig. Among the diehard Mustang crowd, that means within 90 days of the build date.

2x... the 4th character of the VIN will indicate its original engine size.

A=240 inline six
B=302 (Windsor)
Y=360FE
H=390FE

So..... what ya working with?

If the original stamped metal tag is near the distributor it will identify the engine and I'd think that would be a necessity if you wanted "numbers matching"

1968/72 F100/350: A = 240 1V I-6 / B = 300 1V I-6 / G = 302 2V (1969/72 F100 only) / H = 390 2V / Y = 360 2V
