E4OD problems

So I rebuilt the E4OD in my 96 F250 460 truck. I am having a problem where there is no forward gears in OD except when going 40+ and it goes into 4th. There is no 1,2 or 3 with the OD light off. But when the OD light is off I have 1,2 & 3. 2 & 3 slip but not first. I just replaced the solenoid pack with a new one. Does anyone have any ideas?

Do you want to rewrite that post. It seems you are saying conterdicking operations.

You say no gears with OD light off then you say you only have the gears with the OD light off.

Why did you rebuild it? Same problem?

I would check the guts of the plug that plugs into the transmission on the passenger side. This plug gets hot from the exhaust and the wires come off on the back side of the plug under the snap off cover. Is the plug heat shield missing for this plug?

subford-what i was saying is that with the od light on there is no 1,2 or 3 gears. If the od light is off there is 1,2 and 3 gears. If I get the truck speed up to 40mph I can turn the od light off and it will go into 4th. if it tries to downshift with the od light off there is no 3rd.

tayberry73-this is a fresh rebuild with all new friction plates, steels, seals, center support hub and a tugger shift kit.

Still sounds like that plug that plugs into the transmission on the passenger side.
It is either that or the wiring to the plug.
You also might check the TR sensor on the drivers side but I do not think it would cause this problem.

If not those then I would say you have a bad computer.

I hope you did get the right solenoid pack that the plug plugged right into the transmission solenoid pack plug on the passenger side with no diodes on the board. If you put in an older solenoid pack (1994 and older) and changed the plug you could have problems.

yeah it is the correct solenoid for a 95-97 truck. Has the same plug. I will recheck the wiring and connector. hopefully it is something simple like that and not a computer.

It's much, much worse than a computer.

You're saying if the "O/D Cancel" light is lit up on the shifter, you have 1, 2 and 3. Once up to speed, you can re-enable O/D (turning the light off) and it will shift into 4th. If it tries to downshift with O/D enabled (light still off), it seems to be in neutral again.

If the above statement is correct, then the one-way sprag on the coast drum is bad, and the transmission needs to be rebuilt.

I was doing some more checking of things and didnt really find anything. So i took it for another test drive and found that everything was working except for the 1-2 shift. I decided to take it on a longer test drive to get some heat in everything and see if there were any more problems. Everything was going well until I got off the freeway. When I went to go there was nothing. I canceled the OD and the tranny engaged. got up to speed on turned the light off and it clicked into 4th. Then it decided to downshift and I lost everything R, 1,2,3,4. Had it towed off the hwy and later tried it again to see what was going on and it engaged with the od light on & off. I didnt have time to drive it again but at this point I am back to having everything except a 1-2 shift. I had a pressure gauge hooked up and it never dropped below 60psi at idle and the tranny temp never got above 190.
