Rebuilt t-5 from Mac Van Pelt Sales

I am looking for t-5's but having no luck in my area. I stumbled across Mac Van Pelt Sales who offers a rebuilt s-10 NWC t-5 with 2 year warranty for $1195.00. Does anyone have any experience with this vendor both good or bad. Is this a huge rip off or ok deal?

Thanks,

Josh

They are reputable and experianced . How much is shipping going to cost you ? It's not a bad deal for a rebuid with warrenty . Used stuff from a wrecker or private sale is always a bit of a crap shoot .

Mac VanPelt is a super guy, have dealt with him on transmission issues and parts. He's a regular on many forums, including the HAMB, Flathead Forum etc.

You can do a search here: Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market I've had good luck there with used parts availability and price. You can sort on price. If you come up with more than 1 page of hits, it will tell you which page has the lowest price on it. I believe the S10 T5 will work as well and moves the shifter forward.
This might be useful: http://www.britishv8.org/articles/bo...t5-id-tags.htm

Depending on what motor you're using, you may want to consider a world class T5, or at least a T5 that was behind a V8. The mustang and camaro trannys both had the shifter at the rear of the tailshaft housing, the s10 is toward the front of the housing. Either will work with the right shifter. I'm using a rear shifter camaro tranny, with the s10 shift lever which reduces the throw. I had to do some mods to get it to clear the bench seat, but it works just fine. The s10 tailshaft housing can be swapped for the rear shifter housing to make a v8 tranny have the forward shifter. It's easy to do. I remember seeing an ebay seller a few years ago who offered that combo, a wc or nwc gear housing with a s10 tailshaft housing. If you want in depth t5 info, do a search on the hamb. I think it was flat ernie who started a thread that answered a lot of questions.

Found this site while looking for something else...
Rebuilt Manual transmissions shipped worldwide | Manual transmissions factory built and dyno tested! - Drivetrain.com

They have rebuilt T5's for $950 + exchange. I wouldn't be surprised if VanPelt is simply marketing these.

BTW, S-10 trannies in the '93-on timeframe were actually World Class but had electronic speedos.

I tried that search engine thing mentioned by AXracer . You need to try it as well . you might find some thing . Make yourself aware of the available ratio's and how to tell whats what from the transmission tag ( Google Search) for that stuff .

Everyone,

Thanks for the great input. I have really begun using the resources mentioned by Albuq F-1 and Ax Racer. Now I', just pricing the difference between used and a rebuild with already rebuilt. Again thanks for all the help and knowledge.

I'd expect a lower mileage WC wouldn't need a rebuild, especially if it didn't come in a Mustang.

I doubt there are many low-mileage units out there. S-10's stopped using them in '95. An S-10 with the 4-banger is constantly going thru the gears. That's how I found that site, mine has 135k and 2nd & 3rd synchros are shot, the bearings are getting noisy.

I used Mac Van Pelt for parts and advice when I rebuilt my light duty 3 speed with BW overdrive. He is a straight up guy.

Everyone thanks for the honest input and assistance. I have found a 93 s-10 with only 93000 miles for 400.00 out the door at the car-parts.com site suggested by AxRacer. Now I just have to work with an electric speedometer with manual gauges. Again thanks for all the help.

At least one company, Auto Meter I think, makes and adapter to mate an analog speedometer gauge cable drive to an electronic transmission. They are a bit pricey tho IIRC. Not Autometer, here: http://www.classicindustries.com/cam...rts/1860t.html

The page shows how to put a mechanical drive anywhere on the output shaft. Not hard and the parts are cheap.

If swapping tailshafts only use parts from a WC on a WC tranny, and vice versa, don't mix WC and NWC parts.
