1987 ranger fuel pump inertia switch

After doing some tranny work I cranked the truck and after a minute it died. I had lost power to both fuel pumps. Took a meter and have power to and from the relay but none from the inertia switch to the pumps. Unplugged the inertia switch inside the cab and put a jumper wire acrooss the two terminals and everything works fine. Tried pushing the reset button several times on the switch but still nothing. Made the switch trip and reset it but still nothing. Took it back off and used the jumper wire again and all works well. Does that mean the switch is bad or do I have another problem? Didnt want to pay 76.00 for a new switch unless its the problem.
