Lately, Ive been havin what seems like electrical problems upon startup.
for a while, I'd try to start it and all power would be cut off before it turns over, so I have to pop the hood and wiggle the wire from the negative terminal and try again. Since then, I replaced most of the negative terminal wires and havnt had any problems. but, it seems to be getting worse, When it turns over, The engine starts but turns reaally slow and seems like its going to die until it revs up to what sounds like an old loped cam idle on a big block 60s muscle car. after about a minute, It seems like it just kicks on and idles and runs fine. However, the problem isn't persistent. It doesn't happen everytime and there is no pattern. It seems completely random. Its not A big issue but I'm looking for the cause before it causes damage to anything else. Could it be the alternator? I didnt think so because there are no other electrical issues. Faulty wiring could be a possibility because I've found several incorrectly wired electronics so far from the previous owner. Have had the truck since april with no problems, until end of september with these electricals. any input is appreciated,

When you turn the starter it will only put out as much power as it can take from the battery. If the battery doesn't have a lot of stored amperage OR if the starter can't pull enough amperage through faulty wires, the starter won't be able to turn the motor very fast to start it. So there is that. If you find your battery has enough amperage to sufficiently start the vehicle, then something in the motor is causing the starter to turn slow - you don't want this.

I assume from the year of your truck you are MASS Air and that's why the idle is bad for the first minute. Have your checked the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve? To check it, unplug it and if it is doing anything you should notice a difference after you unplug it.

 

Thanks for the reply, my battery is brand new, even tested it but Ive ruled out the battery itself as being the issue. The more I think about it, the more I think I may just need to redo most of the 5 minute diy wiring rigs and do them the right way. as for the sensors.. Ill have to check them tomorrow but I didn't think about those. Also, I've got a code it a P0401 i think, Insufficient egr flow. I was told it is due to a bad catalytic converter by auto zone before I got a scanner.
