Looking at a sweet '79 this Saturday..

Just wanted to let you guys know that this Ranger boy is about to venture into unchartered territories, and I'd like you to wish me luck (even if I am new here). The Ranger is undergoing a 302 swap and I need a beater to drive around town and to tow the little compact pickup around during the swap. I found THIS gem on Craigslist and it's just the way I want it... single cab 2WD 300 I6 with a 3-spd manual. Sex. She may be a little beat up but hey, what's a truck without some character?

Anyways I'm super excited about this thing... like I haven't gotten this giddy about a vehicle since I brought my baby DeLone (the Ranger) home. Hopefully it's what I expect it to be, and I can work out a nice cash offer.

BTW she may not be pretty to most, but this thing is flat out gorgeous to me.

You should get some pretty decent mileage with that drivetrain combo.

If you're lucky the steering slop will be something cheap and easy like a bad rag joint and not the gear box itself.

If I was looking for a beater, a shortbed 2wd with a 300-6 for less than a G would be perfect. Looks like you found it , good luck and welcome.

I'm hoping that 17 is possible, but since it is not going to be my DD, I don't care too much. My daily commute is over fifty miles a day and getting 24 MPG in the Ranger is something too valuable to let go.

Rock Auto sells a rebuild kit for $50. Or it could be that he's never owned an old Ford before...

My 73 had a 240 with a 3 on the tree, I blew it and swapped in a 300, I could not kill that thing, even at 16 years old.

Good luck. I would jump on that and not wait until Saturday. It is likely to be gone. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Can't... between work and school Saturday morning is the only time I have available.

You have no idea how much I want this thing... I've been bouncing off the walls excited for a week now. GAHHHHH I can't wait another 36 hours!!!!

It has everything I want! Three on the tree, 4.9L I6, manual steering, sliding rear window, short bed, 2WD... I'm losing sleep over this thing.

That's what I'm hoping! There's a reason why the 300 has the reputation it has.
