Just trying to think - If the water jackets on the 226 are bigger that means better cooling than the 254 which should work harder (larger Trucks) and run hotter? - Do I have this bass akwards?
The only reason the water jackets could be considered bigger in the 226 is due to the cylinders being marginally (less than a quarter inch) smaller. Not enough to make a lot of difference in water capacity inside the block, and could be more than made up for in the radiator.
Another thing to note is the crank and rods in the 254 are substantially beefier and heavy duty than the 226 parts, even though they are the same stroke.
But again, most of the external parts are the same; water pumps, timing covers, motor mounts, starter, generator and brackets, distributor, oil pump, oil filter canister, oil fill tube, wiring and brackets, etc.
You should also ask if anyone has a 0.040 over piston and ring combo from a 337 flathead V8. Both engines used the same pistons.
I used to have a set of used 337 pistons hanging around my Dad's garage. I'll have to look around and see if I still have them and if so what size they are.

That would be great thanks. I also didn't know the 337 used the same pistons. good to know. Learn something new every day.

Thanks I remember now that he was messing with a few of these old 337's a while ago. I'll send him a message.
