Looking to put a 5spd manual trans in my 76 f250 4x4 with 390....any suggestions? Looking to improve on 8mpg

ZF 5 speed with an adapter. You need a ZF from behind a 300 six or 351w V8:

Ford FE Transmission Adapters

This will not be inexpensive.

Your other choices is to search heaven and earth for an OD Clark and futz around with that conversion, or go to the equally expensive NV4500 conversion:

Say you got a 20% improvement. You are now at 9.6 mpg. Do the math and see how long it will take to pay this off.....

what kinda improvement could i get out of an auto trans? just qurious.....

if i had the $ i would just drop in a 7.3 with a manual trans.. that s my future plan....

 

Same problem with an auto. You need the adapter, up to $850 to put a GM 700R or Ford AOD behind an FE. Not sure about the 700R, but the AOD needs a little work to handle the FE and can be quite expensive if you buy one already beefed.

Given the OD ratios of .78 or so, figure MAYBE 20% MPG improvement in good conditions.
