buying 88 350 w/bad injector, can I replace with junkyard part
Hey Guys,
I am looking to buy this truck
1988 f350 diesel
I am going to offer him $500 I think and then see about getting the injector from a junkyard, there are some from 50-150 that I have seen from junkyards online in my area.
Can anyone tell me if this is a good/bad idea replacing from a junk yard?
What is the difficulty level on replacing this? Can I do it in the yard and leave with it the same day? What kind of problems do people usually run in to while replacing them?
Does the truck look like a good deal?
Thanks Again,
Devin

It says it needs a new injection pump, not an injector.
The problem with a junkyard part like that is you don't know if you're buying someone else's reason for junking their truck. Depending on how long the pump has been sitting unused it could also be full of bacteria clogging it up. On the other hand, you're only risking $150 if that's an accurate price.

sorry I meant to say injector pump, I knew that.
well looking at car-parts.com under 88 f350 for fuel injector pump
there are (3) options,
supply pump,
injector pump high altitude, &
injector pump exc. high altitude
regular supply pumps range from 50 - 75
nothing was listed under option 2
and one listed under exc. high altitude for $100
I don't know the difference on all the different pumps, I live on the North Shore in Massachusetts and I don't believe the altitude is all that high.
So if I risk 50-75 bucks for a part with and A rating ( 60k miles on it)
that does sound to bad does it?
But does anyone know how hard a job it is, and how much time?
Thanks Again,
Devin

Have him put a freshly charged battery in it, and crank the engine. Make sure the engine cranks over, and it sounds even while cranking. Another thing to consider, if the injection pump is all that's wrong, and it's $150 fix, why hasn't he done it himself? A $150 pump to make the truck running would net more than a $150 increase in price.

Hey I wanted to come back to thanks everyone,
I ended up opting out, not because of the work involved but because it was the 3-speed auto, and I would eventually want to swap to the zf5 and after looking at the cost and effort involved with that I decided against it.
I am wicked cheap and enjoy doing things myself so that would have been a perfect truck if it had already had a zf5, plus I really wanted an 80-86 and I will do the zf5 swap on that instead.
I did find a truck after all though, more than I was hoping to spend but I think it is a good deal also. I will post pictures when I get it, but I don't wan to spoil it yet.
So Moto Mel it is all yours, if not I hope someone in the area that is a little bit more knowledgeable and willing to take a risk will go get it and do something nice with it
Thanks Again Guys,
Devin
