Econoline leaky transmission

I've got a '65 Econo with a C4 transmission that periodically pukes fluid everywhere (maybe from the vent?). Doesn't do it all the time and appears to do it more often if it's been sitting for a while. The transmission has been gone through twice (according to PO and receipts). I'm about to go buy a reman and turn this thing in for a core. Although that seems like a waste with a transmission that has fewer than 4000 miles on it, I don't have the time to screw with this thing a whole lot.

Is there a magic check valve that the good folks at the transmission shop may have forgotten that I can easily replace? Other ideas?

Thanks,
p

ps it shifts like crap too: doesn't downshift when I stop, and seems to take forever to upshift, but this is my first Cruise-O-Matic so maybe that's normal?
