After 3.5 hours of working to remove the air pump tubing from as much of the top/rear of the engine as necessary, I was able to gain access to the bell housing bolt holding the tranny dipstick tube.

The good news is, the tranny is out and ready to be worked on!!

Here is a picture of my E4OD. It looks good to me, no burnt smell or dark spots anywhere, fluid looked great!

Basically, I am going to replace the seals (front and rear) and the O-ring behind the pump in the front.

I am wondering how to remove the rear seal. Here is a pic of it so far...but I wonder if there is a better way...

Also, do you know if this tranny can be flushed while out of the truck? With it being electronically controlled and all, does the tranny shop need special equipment to perform a flush while out of the vehicle?

thanks,
mikey.

Turns out I found the removal instructions for the rear extension housing seal in the shop manual section marked "In-Vehicle Service". They use some sort of special puller from the outside. They also have one for the bushing.

Anyone have any thoughts on flushing the tranny (E4OD) while it is outside the vehicle - any special machines needed by the shop due to this being all electronic?

Was able to remove the rear seal by clamping vise-grips to the rim of the seal and using a hammer to pound out the seal. easier than it sounds.

Now, the seal/gasket around the filter is stuck to the inside of the transmission. Picking pieces of it out with tweezers works, but it is a slow going process.

Any hints on removing this gasket?

Yep, but I can't get the seal/gasket to come out as one piece. Dental pick gets me under the seal, but then it tears into small pieces as I try to pull it away from the housing. Or the pick rips thru the rubber leaving me with a hole but just as much rubber as in the first place. I tried using tweezers, but got only a small bit of the rubber (see picture).

Thoughts?

Yes. Well I dug and scraped, and peeles that old gasket off. If you ask me, it was a liquid seal, like RTV or form a gasket or something. I got most of it off, 99% anyway, and put the new filter back in.

Spent the past two days bolting her back into the truck, and am now ready to put in fluid.

Do you, or anyone, know the best way/place to get 4 gallons of tranny fluid? OR do I just go to the Pep Boys/Autozone, and buy 16 quarts?

thanks!
mikey.
