My 4x4 Does Not Work

Okay everyone new to the whole Ford family. I have a 2003 Ford F150 XLT 5.4 V8 with about 131,000 on it. The 4wd does not work at all. You move the electronic switch no light in the dash no click at the actuator motor no nothing. I took the switch on the dash off and from the dark blue wire I am getting 11.5 volts from there constant. Let me know anything to try I would very much so like to get this fixed as soon as possible thanks everyone

Suggest you check out the sticky right at the beginning of this forum board on diagnosing 4x4 malfunctions. I've read it before and it's very comprehensive.

Don't take anything apart until you get some info on how it works.
You would be waisting your time and possibly causeing more issues.
It's a complex system controlled by a module.
The switch only begins a request for an action.
There are fused power feeds, a module, a transfer case motor, relays, vacuum controlled front axle actuator etc.

As Bluegrass stated it's a complicated system and requires a troubleshoot procedure. You can however check the following fuse's to see if they're blown.

Battery Junction Box; Fuse 104--30amp. Central Junction Box; Fuse 6--5amp: Fuse 15--5amp: Fuse 23--10amp.

I went through all the fuses and none of them were blown. I'm sorry its just frustrating to not know what is wrong.

I realize this may not go over to good but you are displaying a hard head approch right off the bat.
First line in my reply also said to learn about it before doing anything.
Did you miss that?
.
Going on, the 4wd has no connection to the CEL on the dash.
It's not engine PCM related except for a program operation change in 4L.
Said another way the PCM does not even know about 4x4 operations from a stand alone system.
.
What have you done besides work on the swtch?
It is tough to work through a board on these systems as it is, so you need to work with us to try to get to the root cause of the problem.
.
To start off, the swtch signals the GEM module under the dash.
The GEM closes a relay to run a 12 volt motor on the rear of the trannsfer case.
This motor runs to two positions. First one is 4H. It also turns an internal shaft to change the power flow through the trans to the front drive shaft.
At near the same time the GEM operates a solenoid relay on the firewall to apply engine vacuum to a front axle actuator for engaement of the front drive.
When all this happens the light on the dash lights for 4H telling you the operation is complete.
In 4L the transfer case motor moves one more position and turns the shaft to a position for more gear reduction.
A the same time it signals the computer to use a program patch that changes the shift vs rpm timing.
To get into 4L you must be in neutral, stopped and foot on brake before moving switch to 4L. The reason for this is to prevent doing so at speed , breaking things, injury to people from the sudden change in gear ratio.
.
Back to your point.
If nothing works and no reactions, first thing is power to check out.
Has the windshield leaked onto the Gem module. It's part of the dash fuse panel.
Possible the last owner has messed it up by not knowing anything about the way it works, so you have to go through the testing from that point of view since I assume it has not worked as you got the truck.
.
You must know that we can spot an owner lack of knowledge and his atititude as well as not knowing how the system works since we have been through this many times before here on this board..
I gave you a run down on the sequence of opertions but cannot be there to lead you so you must interpet the situation if you are going to help yourself.
. Sorry to get a little pointed but we have to get you turned around and pointed in the right direction.
Notice we will not get into dissagreement with you but only try to get you going because it solves nothing to be at odds, at this point.
There will be many thousands of people who will find this thread and post over time for help in all the ways presented.
Many times have I searched the Internet for info only to bring up my own posts about some subjects.
Good luck, let us know what's happening.
