Water Pump

The water pump on my e99 7.3 is leaking. Usually when I turn it off. When driving all you get is antifreeze smell. In two days it has leaked about two inches out of the bottle.

I am 900 miles from home and reluctantant to tear into it at the campground. That said I did pick up a new water pump from Napa auto parts. They said it is made by Bosh. It looks like a pretty nice pump. I would not have a problem to get into it if I was in my own driveway at home. I have all the tools except for the air chisel to get the fan loose.

My motto if it can go wrong it will... Just for fun I am going to call the Ford dealer and see what they charge for a water pump replacement... Any guesses?

Wasn't this posted somewhere else recently? I could swear that a lot of people said not to drive on it and replace it where you are so you don't chance overheating your engine. It could be another person in a campground that has a leaky water pump though.

No, this is a seperate question on the dealer cost for a water pump replacement. The truck is not overheating but it does have a leak...

But thanks for looking that up...

I say if it JUST started leaking nurse it home where you won't be stranded if something goes wrong during the replacement-plus you'll have your own tools to work with as well.
I wouldn't take mine to a dealer unless it was an absolute emergency.
IF it becomes an emergency I'd trust a BIG TRUCK shop over a "car" type dealer...hopefully an International dealer......Good Luck!

My waterpump dumped about 2 quarts of antifreeze out when I got to work, all was on the ground when I went to get in my truck at the end of my shift. I just loosened my rad cap so the system didnt pressurize and took it easy on the way home (appx 35 miles). I had no Ill effects.
Strangely enough it was the day after I replaced my heater core.....

Yours does not sound as severe.

My .02 would be to take plenty of water with ya and nurse it home, You can always have it towed if it progresses. Some garages may even give ya a free tow if they do the replacement. Try to do some searching for possible nubmers to call "IF".

Drive it home. Check the level and refill as needed.

Not a big deal at all.

I don't usually like admitting when I have been royaly screwed but I will so maybe someone else wont' be..

I called the dealer this morning and told them I needed a water pump replacement and asked for the cost. They qouted $300 for labor and 250 for parts... $550. I thought about just driving it home but I am towing a 12000lb trailer and figured I would be really pushing my luck. So, I drove the 100 miles to the dealer.

It took the three hours to get started and another 3 hours to do the job... I go to pay the bill. The water pump alone was $345 then they charged another $60 for a new thermostat and $85 for additive and antifreeze. They found that my serpentine belt had a nick in it so $70 for that.

Including shop supplies and tax it was $926!

The answer... It was only a estimate!

You got hosed. You could have bought a new water pump, belt, tools to do the job and been ahead $400 or more...

Should have just drove it home my friend, I have pulled half way across the country with a leaking water pump, leaking oil cooler and leaking turbo pedistal. Just check the fluid levels.

Yes, and they were not even romantic about it.... My fear was being stranded on tbe side of the road with a 36 foot trailer in the middle of knowhere USA... Needless to say If the dealer had been upfront with a honest estimate I would have done just what you suggested.

Interesting. Today, my water pump pukes while at work. It was practically pouring out though. I had to have it towed home. You can't get a trailer big enough to handle one of these Damn trucks very easily. The old '86 is back in action.

DAMN the water pump is big on the PSD. Dealer part or any parts store? Riffraff sell them? What about t-stat, housing upgrade (preferable the billet one that doesn't leak) and full flush to ELC? Where to buy serpentine belt?
