New Engine
A Ford dealer can install a Ford Quality Renewal engine for $3500-$4500 with at least a 3yr/36,000 mile warranty.
You could also buy a long block for $2200 or an engine from a wreck for around $2000... There are quite a few options.

Does this fit what happened to his engine:

Quite a few owners have had to replace their 1997 4.2L, so I'm sure you'll get some first hands accounts as well. If it were mine, I definitely would not buy another engine from Ford when they should have built the original right in the first place. Ford should not be rewarded for building a low-quality engine.

I was refered to a company called All Engine from a freind of mine who had put one of their engines in his truck and neither one of us have had any problems at all. They remanufacture engines which I learned is different than rebuilt engine! My engine was so clean you could eat off it I almost hated to put it in my truck and get it dirty. They use all new parts and the best prices I have found to this day. 3 years unlimited mileage waranty. Their web site is www.allautoengines.com check them out and let me know what you think!
