fuel issue with a 95 psd, please help

I have a 95 PSD as the title says, this is my first diesel so I am pretty much fresh meat around here. Here is a little background, about a month ago I started having trouble with one of the tanks, it wouldn't draw any fuel. I did a ton of research on here and came to the conclusion I most likely have an issue with the pickup in the tank, I have a flatbed on the way so I was waiting until I pulled the old bed to investigate. 2 days ago she left me walking, thankfully not far. The fuel filter light was coming on because it was draining the "bowl" (I would call it anyway) where the filter goes. I took it to a local shop doing 3 to 4 miles at a time before I had to pull over and remove the filter, refill and go on, thankfully it wasn't too far. I received and estimate just shy of four grand to fix it, cam sensor, fuel pump, and 8 injectors. I am very mechanically inclined, so today I put a pump in it, no big deal took about an hour, when I removed the old one the bottom of the pump was snapped off the pushrod was snapped too, pulled everything out and installed the new pump. (Has to be my problem right?, running out of fuel, erratic fuel pressure, broken pump...it seemed obvious until I fired it up.). It ran for about 5 minutes and to my dismay the fuel filter light started flickering just like before until it stayed on solid, and ran out of fuel. I always said if I owned a diesel it would be a Ford, now I am wondering if I made a good call, everything breaks down I know, that was mostly frustration talking. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks a lot.

Ben.

Roughly 50 psi, I used to think I knew my way around a toolbox and under a hood, but this diesel is starting to make me think otherwise. That was the first thing I checked thinking maybe the new pump broke like the old one, but it held steady which boggles my mind even more.

Did you check to make sure your fuel bowl didn't have some sort of leak?

Question

Have you drained the fuel bowl? How is your fuel filter? Clean the screen in the bowl.

Screen is fine, there are no external leaks anywhere that I can see. It will sit and idle all day long but as soon as the R's come up the light starts flickering more and more until its solid red and it dies. Thanks for the replies though, I don't know a whole lot about diesels but this one is very puzzling and interesting, but its my work so I have to get it fixed or no paycheck.

If you change to the other fuel tank its the same?. I guess you have some kind of restriction somewhere.

The filter was fine?

How much fuel is in the tank? Is it sucking air? Yes, it could be a blocked screen in the tank.

Front tank or rear doesn't matter, 40 mph max otherwise it runs dry. Rear tank is just under half front tank is just over half. Brand new filter when I did the pump yesterday. Selector valve is switching just fine also

Perhaps a fuel line between the selector valve and engine is bent or kinked, would allow just enought fuel to pass at idle, but not enough when running? Just a thought. Sounds like what happened to my '87 6.9 when I found a blue shop rag sucked up the pickup in the tank.

Obstructions in both tanks does seem like a stretch. And when it shuts down, there is no fuel, or the fuel level is low in the filter housing. Have you chased the fuel line from the fuel pump to the connections at the switch from one tank to the other. You may have a leak allowing for air to enter. What was the condition of the rubber lines when you changed the fuel pump? The intake line could be collapsing like a check valve.
