That's good to know. I may just have to order it directly from them. I wish they made a 4000 RPM sport comp II tach like the rest of my gauges. But doing that will work too.

Good to know I'm not the only one that thinks 10,000 rpm tachs are a bit much!

I'll keep that tach idea stored away in my head, the cheap solutions are always the best. I have dreams of a 4bt with a 3.9 ISB head, but I'm pretty well invested in the FE's, I just love the old dinosaurs I guess.

One of my plans is to swap in an entire F600 dash, complete with factory 4,000 rpm tach. That one might actually happen, I've got the gauge cluster.

Those 4bt's are cool. I'd love to stuff one in a 56 f-100. But my combo would be 4bt, isb head, a p7100 pump and twin turbos.

F-600 dashes are way cool. I have too much time and money in mine to swap it out now.

But really when you get right down to it, why not just us a 6 cylinder? It is going cost the same if not less and have a lot more power.

True, for that application it's the length and the weight. A 6bt probably wouldn't fit and definitely be over weight.

4BTs also get crazy good mileage. I've heard of guys getting around 30 putting them in F-150s. I think it would be hard to get 30 out of a 6BT

I like the 6bts better. I have a 4bt in a F150 (best i've seen is 22-24mpg) 30 may be possible if you are a standard, low to the ground and don't push it. The length of the 6bt is a real issue.

Loving the temp probe fix & tach info. I've gone back & forth on what I will do for tach. I think I can now run a pro comp one that will match the rest of my gauges. I think I saw one in 5k limit too. 4k would be better, but hey, 5k is way better than 10k!!

Thanks for the info!

No problem sir! Shoot me the info on the 5k if you find it. The lowest pro comp I could find is that 6k diesel one.

I will. Could just be crappy memory on my part, and maybe it was a 6k - not a 5k... I just remember finding something under 10k, but still a bit higher than would be useful on a diesel.
In my defense it has been 2-3 years since I was actually looking at tachs.

That's what happens when I take waaaaay too long on my build

*edit* Just looked at Autometer again briefly & of course the pro-comp 6k diesel tach that matches my other gauges is $400+!!! They do have a decently priced Sport-Comp in a 5k design but it has a white face. 1 of 2 white faced Sport-Comps I saw. Of couse it looks like they don't make the 5k in black face. They make a black one but it's a 8k gauge. WTF...

I'm pretty sure I'm going to go with the auto meter 2890 and have them change the bezel to silver. I'm hoping they will change the needle out to a sport comp II needle as well. It's $110.00 so I cannot imagine them charging much to change that stuff.

I looked back in to the Word doc. I have saved that has all my links on parts & how-to's and I had Autometer tach #'s I had saved were the Z series 2697 or 2888 (both 5k) or the sport comp 3991 which is an 8k.

What you had works even better so I'm saving that #!

co425,

I have enjoyed reading your build thread and your detailed pictures.
It has been very informative.

If I my memory is right you have 3.73 gear ratio with 35" bfgs, what is your rpms at 65 mph in 5th gear?

I have a 77 F250 that I want to install a cummins 4bt with a nv4500.

You are correct. I have 3:73's on 35" tires. Closer to 34" In reality 315/75/16. I am unsure of my rpm at any speed. I have not completed my tach install yet. However I can say I can run her at 65 in 4th. She feels like she is lugging in 5th unless I am over 60-65 mph. With the gearing and tires 75-80 mph down the highway is a really comfortable speed.

Thats the same setup I'm going with, 3.73 and 35's. Here in Colorado there's alot of 65-80 mph driving. Should be perfect!
