Need a Toyo Kogyo TK5 or Swap?
Have an '85 Ranger with a toyo kogyo tk5 tranny. who sells rebuilds? is there a suitable conversion to a newer 5-speed manual? Synchos bad in 1st and 2nd, how hard is a rebuilding it yourself? Built engines in the past, never a transmission. Thanks for any advice.

There is a place in Las Vegas that will come up with google search for "drivetrain". I have had good service from them when I rebuilt an M5od from an F150.
From what I have read, a Mazda M5od from a later Ranger will bolt up to your engine, but will be about three inches too long, so you would need the driveshaft from the truck you pull the tranny from. The M5OD is not really a strong transmission, but is supposed to be a lot stronger than the other manual transmissions offered in Rangers.
I don't know where you are, but if you go to a pull your own parts junkyard; be sure to get the shifter, boot and bezel from the donor.
The hard part of rebuilding a manual transmission is finding a good parts illustration and instrustions for clearances and specifications. It really isn't hard, but pubs like the Haynes books seem to think that anything other than changing fluid in a gearbox is beyond anybody that isn't a "professional mechanic."
