'03 6.0 broke
Hi all. I have a 2003 F-250 CC FX4 SRW auto 6.0, engine build of 01/03. Bought it new. It stranded me two weeks later at about 1100 miles when one of the injectors(#8) leaked about 7 quarts of diesel into my oil shutting the truck down on a cross country trip to CA. That was a little over 9 years ago. No major motor problems since except the driveability issues, computer flashes, etc. It has 86,000 miles now. I rarely tow, and then only very lightly. I have been very conscious with maintenance, ran synthetic everything since 30,000 mile oil change every 5K. I always use diesel fuel additives(Lucas,Power Service, etc.) and don't skimp on the amount, I use double dose as a rule, Motorcraft or Racor filters. It had the check engine light on for a few days. I had Pulled the batteries and alternator, everything checked out OK. All fluid levels normal. No exhaust smoke or anything. My diesel mechanic was on vacation so I had parked the truck until he gets back. Had to drive to work one afternoon(wife took my commuter car), and the truck started running very rough all of a sudden sitting at a stoplight. Could'nt pull over, had to go over an overpass, stalled out near the top. Got it restarted and ran like crap. AAA towed it for me. Just found out the fuel pump(HFCM) went out, took out #8 and #3 injectors with it. Those injectors are the original C94's that caused a lot of troubles in the early trucks. Been planning on getting EGR deleted, head studs, oil cooler etc.... done this summer or fall, and replacing those injectors while it was torn down. I saw the cylinder test? he ran and they were all 100% except one, it was 98%. A bunch of codes, but nothing else. Decided to have all 8 injectors replaced(Ford stuff), and go with Air Dog fuel pump conversion. My mechanic drives an early 6.0 with over 200,000 with the same set-up, original head gaskets with egr deleted.
I'm getting an Edge programmer installed with EGT probe. I don't run the truck hard, so not worried about blowing anything up. Just looking for the monitoring capability and maybe some increase in mpg. I'm looking for the easiest install for a do-it-yourself dual exhaust set-up, preferably turbo back. Gonna hold off on the major motor stuff for now, maybe next spring after I recover from the bill I'm about to get. So much for extended warranties. I went through two of them, never came close to the mileage limits. Ran out of time. Learned a lot on this forum. I do all my own maintenance thanks to all the great info. learned here over the years. Can't wait to get back in the truck.
