Malfunction in 4WD - pulses when disengaged
My 1996 Explorer 4.0 4WD has a problem with 4WD. When I back up it feels like the 4WD is engaged, it pulses like the truck is in 4WD on dry pavement and you try to make a sharp turn. This is when the dash switch is set to 2WD.
If I switch to 4WD, nothing happens. 4WD does not engage.
While stopped, if I switch to 4WD LOW, 4WD LOW will engage with a clank. When I switch back to 2WD while stopped, the truck continues in 4WD LOW for a few feet then changes to 2WD. I can drive normally in 2WD, except when I put the truck into reverse and it occasionally feels like the 4WD is still engaged, when I change gears to Drive, it seems to perform normally.
A couple of times when I changed to 4WD, the 4WD and 4WD LOW indicator lights blink three or four times, then go out.
With these symptoms, anyone have any suggestions on where I should start troubleshooting?
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
(NOTE: Thanks to everyone that helped me on the wheel bearing problem. )
