Swap Or Fix: E4OD Issues

Hey guys. I just recently blew my front seal outta my E4OD. Iv spent all day tryin to get this (bleep)ing thing out and im fed up! After readin around some on this forum, Iv come to realize that these trannys are less than desireable. Hard to believe.... Would it be worth it to swap out my seal or swap a different trans into my truck?

Info: 460, A4OD, 4x4. Thanks guys! I needa drink

The only other transmission options are the C6 or one of the manuals and you would have to also make a computer change to prevent poor engine operation, a firestorm of codes and a constant check engine, fix the seal and then install the biggest trans oil cooler you can find so you don't blow it out again.

way too expensive (and nice imho) of a trans to give up on,just because of a 6-8$ part.
keep plugging away! you'll get 'er.
replace that front pump seal with the updated viton seal.you can get it at NAPA.
don't give up.

p.s
if you have the coin, now sure would be the time to upgrade the converter.not sure about the gasser ones, but the converters they put in back of the diesels were failure prone, and when they came apart, their externals would spread through the trans and clean out the whole expensive works!
no time like now to research since she'll soon be out.

just did this to mine.i had a seized solid bolt! i had to use air,and then when she finally vibrated apart with that a bit,i cut the bolt right off to get the trans out.the bolt left in the engine side turned right out with fingers.the trans side, just air impact back and forth.or hammer and punch back and forth, back and forth.
don't get overwhelmed.just keep at it.before you know it,she'll be all out.

I checked on it and, your right. Its like $6 lol. Gotta pull the whole damn transmission out to get to a $6 part lol.

Its got a tranny cooler on it now and its definitly aftermarket. I might put another one underneath it to double its cooling capacity since that seems to be a weak link on these old trannies lol

Don't install an aditional cooler or you'll slow down the flow too much. There are some other modifications you can make to help with the tranny cooling.

The easier one: Aftermarket deeper aliminum pan with fins (and a drain plug, that would be nice to have too).

You can also try a set up of a small elec. fan helping the cooler you already have installed.

The cooler on there is in front of the radiator lol. It gets the blunt of the airflow. But I like the idea of a deeper pan. Wonder how much they cost lol

You can find some for less than $200 in Summit Racing, I bet you can find them even cheaper.

I love the E40d hands down. I'm looking to swap out a >good< C6 in a truck I got today for one of my spare E4's. Looks like its going to cost me 600 and I think it will be worth the money and time.

Dont give up...

I looked em up. Cheapest one I found was on a diesel truck website. They had a pretty nice one with tubes in it that flow air through the oil. Pretty impressive. And it was $80. I saw some on summit for 400+

You have no idea how good is aluminum at heat transference, that and the fins will make an aluminum pan more effective than this one. Those air tubes will get plugged and stop doing their intended job quite easily. And remember, 8 more qts. are expensive. But it seems like a nice product.

Been looking at this option also and I don't have the numbers in front of me but B&M makes one out of cast aluminum that has a drain plug and a temp sensor port. The bottom of it is ribbed like a heat sink. Seems like it was about 180 or so.
