door sheet metal repairs

A while ago I repaired the doors sheet metal of my 1951 F1. The bottoms and corners were rusted out.

First I started repairing the corners to keep the it all into shape.

As you can see the reinforcements is completely gone. So I had to make myself a new one.

I started with this piece of sheet metal and started forming it.

I had to cut the sides to give it the curve it needed.

The end result, after welding it back together and make it fit onto the original reinforcement.

The result after some welding and grinding.

The corner as seen on the picture had some rust holes so I decided to replace it too.

Made a little patch panel.

Spot welded it into place.

Test fitted a another patch panel.

Shaped it a little more.

Spot welded it into place.

Quite a few holes Had to replace the complete bottom too.

Took half of the bottom out to maintain the doors shape.

Looks quite bad.

Made a patch panel for the whole door and cut it in half later.

Test fitted the panel and make sure its all strait.

Welded it into place.

The other side.

Some rust holes into the doors skin.

Cutted it out.

Made a patch panel.

Test fitting.

Some welding.

Some more welding and grinding.

The endresult

I hoped you guys enjoyed it:P

I've got only one question. I haven't got thedrivers side door latch (without the keylock). Is there anyone who has one laying around that he's willing to sell? Or knows where I can buy them?

If you guys I interested I have got more sheet metal pictures that may be intersted.

I can't help you with the door parts, but I am admiring your work! Nice art work.

Excellent work showing what can be done with a minimum number of tools in the home shop. I assume you will return and weld the patch panels in solidly?

One suggestion I would make is if at all possible make the corners of your patches round (trace around a soda can or roll of duct tape) rather than square. It is easier to cut them square, but a circle is a much shorter distance, so less heat is generated when welding them in, especially in the very corner, so you are less likely to get warping and distortion.

Very nice workmanship. My guess is your step-by-step pictures and comments will be helpful to many on this site.

Nice work, You make it look so easy. How many hours do you think you have into that repair?

I'm pretty sure I have an extra drivers side door lock mechanisim, (plus another spare rusted out door with one in it) I'll look for it. you can send me a PM or email if ya want to just click on my user name.

Thanks, it's not that hard you should just take the time to get it done the right way. The door as seen took me 3-4 days to fix.

I'm looking for the door latch mechanism for the drivers side without the keylock.

If Josh doesn't have one, then I may.

Problem is we don't know which side of the road you drive on in the Netherlands or if it's a US truck. Is your truck left hand drive or right hand drive?

It's a us truck and we drive on the right side of the road. They weren't sold around here.
