The ZF has a low first gear and is a heavier trans. The Mazda has a 3.91 first gear.

Mazda: ribs are up and down, ZF, ribs are diagonal. Pics:

You should have an inspection plate in the floor of the truck. From that, you can remove the shifter and top cover. Typical wear items in the Mazda box includ shifter bushings and even shift forks. All replaceable through that cover.

This concerns the rubber plug issue, which sometimes leads to leaks. Some clear shots of the top of the trans.

There was a fork replacement article with pics, but I just can't find it.

Check out the cover. You should be able to see obvious issues, and I think it's pretty straight forward once you are in there.

The worst case of the best case would be a worn shift fork.

Once the shifter, bushings and forks are checked, all via the top cover with the trans in the truck, the next step is removal and disassembly of the trans.

I still can't find the one I want, but this has clear pics of the inside of the top cover--off a T-bird. Yours is slightly different, as your shifter is on top the cover, not on the tail shaft housing.

One note I see says you have to pull a seat out....not sure on that.

okay well i pulled the shifter out the top of the transmission not shift fork cover the cover that has three screws on it and there is sapose to be bushings in ther right?? and too thin washer style things?? there was one washer and no bushings in there and with the shifter in the transmission you can lift it up abou a 1/4 to 1/2 inch and it has alot of side to side play but anyways when i pulled it out i cranked the truck up and got a flat head screw driver in there and yas playing around and got it in neutral and put it back in there and was able to drive it down the road got all thew way up to third gear being easy with it and then i messed up and tryed to shift kinda fast and the same thing happened it got stuck in gear and was in neautral posiion but would go in 3 and 4th gear it felt like???? what could it be i got it back to neutral and left it think its those bushing missing??

Good luck with it, maybe that will do the deed. As long as those plugs aren't leaking, you are OK. You'd know, you would have come up with a hand full of goo.....

Plugs on the driver side, one drain, one fill. A little over 2 quarts. A colorful discussion:

Mine was stuck in gear once. It was a bad shift fork. I replaced both shift forks which was a fairly easy job. No problems since.
