1964 F100 Horn Ring Assembly

I have a 64 F100 custom cab with the three spoke steering wheel horn ring and am trying to figure out the horn ring assembly. I don't understand the contact that makes the horn work. Under the horn ring there is a metal coil spring. There is a contact brush assembly that makes constant contact with the back metal of the steering wheel. My horn blows periodically when I go over bumps, but nothing happens when I press on the horn ring. I've got a new contact brush assembly. I thought I read on here that 2 are required, but I only see one. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

2 are required, but the second one is underneath the steering wheel. You have to pull the wheel to replace it.

Fix your cab mounts and adjust the column to spec.

Thanks Mark. I see where the contact brush is assembly is underneath the steering wheel. It makes constant contact with the back of the steering wheel. Where is the other brush assembly?

one is part of the turn signal switch and the other fits into the steering wheel and makes contact with the horn button.

Remove the nylon retainer from the horn ring and the plate it mounts to. Now what do you see? The tattered remains of this:

CODZ-13A813-A .. Horn Ring Pressure Pad / Reproduced

Applications: 1961/70 F100/250 & 1967/70 F350 w/a 3 spoke steering wheel / 1960/66 Falcon/Comet/Fairlane/Mustang/Galaxie/LTD/Bronco.

Over time this rubber pad flattens out/distintigrates. Most people are unaware, so they replace everything horn related, the horn still won't blow.

Take a look-see on page 20 in DC's 1957/66 truck repro parts catalog for a pic (# F) of the little charmer. 2011 DC paper edition sez: $12.00.

Note: Take a close look at the horn brush, there's a thin copper wire inside its coil spring that is notorious for snapping.

C2OZ-13A821-A .. Horn Brush and Insulator Kit. The insulator fits into a hole on the outside of the steering wheel FIRST, followed by the brush.

When people remove the wheel, both of these parts can fall out. So make sure you have the insulator, and the copper wire is intact, or the horn won't blow.

Thanks Mark and Bill. I appreciate the help. I've ordered the parts from DC. To be clear, when placing the contact brush assembly into the hole does the solid end go in first or the spring end? Thanks.

Spring end goes into the hole.

The coil spring attaches to both ends of the horn brush as does the thin copper wire. If not attached, it's time for a new horn brush.

Parts catalog pic shows rounded end of brush towards horn ring, flat end inserts into steering wheel.
