rebuild limited slip

Ok guys, its time to do something with the limited slip on my truck. I changed the oil and put the additive in and it still chatters and whines like crazy when turning. So here's the question: should I put in a Detroit Truetrac for $1100 or should I just get the limited slip rebuilt at a local shop for $700?? The truck has 120,000 miles on it, so it probably won't go forever. What do you all think? My mechanic says he could just pull a shim or two out of the clutches to loosen it up, and then the limited slip wouldn't work quite as well. That's fine with me, as I don't take my truck offroad much. Should I just do that? Thanks for any thoughts....

I would go go with the tru-trac. I've been a fan for years and use them in both ends of my jeep. They are a gear driven lsd that requires no modifires. The traction is far superior to a trac lok, closest thing to a locker without the bad street manors.

Well I think I'm just gonna have my mechanic remove a shim or two to loosen things up. I very seldom take my truck offroad and as such don't really need an aggressive locking diff. Let me know what yall think of this idea.

The 4x4 with limited slip rear axle is great for snowy/icy roads handling. If you don't feel the need, most don't need the limited slip. It is great for pulling yourself out of a ditch if you slip off. 4x4 will put you most places you want to go. The limited slip will usually bring you back from those places. One thought- you might talk to your dealer and get an additive to add, it is for wet brakes which use clutch like designs, helps with the chatter, silicone based I believe. might help you before rebuild or down grade, but with 120,000 think you may be looking at a need to reb the axle, with bearing problems. LOL

Personally, I really like the LS for alot of reasons from snow or ice to a simple soft spot in a gravel road so if it were me, I'd rebuild it. I've had several of these and rebuilt several as well, they're really easy to rebuild. Roughly $150 for a kit with friction modifier, and 2 hours labor you're back on the road, so $700 seems awful steep for a little rebuild. An alternative would be to swap it out for an open diff to eliminate the need to rebuild it again later on in life, since you don't need the LS anyway; it'd most likely be cheaper than rebuilding if your mechanic isn't a hoser... Just weigh your options I guess, but if it were me I'd find a new mechanic and replace the clutches in your existing unit
