Help, 6.4L diesel cranking, not starting, stranded
<hr style="color:#D1D1E1; background-color:#D1D1E1" size="1"> Just got a call from my son down in Yorktown, Va. from a gas station. His 2009 F250 6.4 L diesel will crank, but not start. Naturally, it is his only way to get around other than his motorcycle. He did say that the starter tried to stay engaged once, and he shut it down, but now it won't try to fire anymore......... I know that I can use the search, but I'm trying to find out as quick as possible to get him going, by long distance........ from Delaware! Help!

(I moved this from a different spot, where I posted it wrongly before!)

All the mechanical brainiacs are never really on here on the weekends, Tells you what they do when they at work lol. Sounds like it is not getting fuel, hopefully not the HPFP.

She was turning over, just wouldn't fire off! Truck has 43,000 miles on it...... What worries me is taking anything to a dealer, any dealer, and letting them have their way with me, or in this case, my son. I saw that there was a TSB out on some of the 6.4L engines built in 07, but this one "supposedly" isn't covered by it. If the harness has to be replaced, doesn't that require removing the cab ................ and big bucks?

Son said that he hit a reset button by the passenger door, but it would only turn, not run. He said the the tow truck driver turned the switch on and off several times, and hit the start, and it turned, started and then died! However, it would still turn, but not start when he tried it again. (?)
My son's truck was left parked outside, and he is going to take a look at it tomorrow, providing that he can learn anything between now and Monday.
Everything that one can learn, is a GOOD thing, and another clue to the puzzle..............

I did some reading up on the problems, Several other forums and I'm starting to think its the low pressure lift pump.

Low pressure lift pump? I'll check into that! Is it resetable, or testable, by the owner, I wonder....................

Have him pull the top filter out for the fuel and look inside. If there is metal or rust then we know why it won't run.

Have him drain the lower filter and check for water.

You could also hold that fuel cutoff switch while cranking and maybe that will work.

Tell me, when he turns the key to the on position without cranking does he hear a buzz sound? That buzz is the pump in the tank. Without that you get nothing.

If he pulls the filters then he needs to go thru the purge procedure before attempting a crank and start

Are you sure the fuel pump is not mounted on the frame rail under the driver seat?

Any codes thrown? Need to get a code reader on it. If no codes, then it's not detected by the PCM, which eliminates a lot of stuff. Engine only needs two things, air and fuel.

Anything you can do to diagnose fuel pressure and flow is the answer.

I do think there is a pump of sorts in the tank. could be wrong though..like that has never happened.
