2005 F250 SD turbo loss when towing
I have spent a couple of hours trying different search combos, so please forgive me if this topic is covered specifically and I've yet to find it.
Situation: Tonight, 2005 Ford F250 Super Duty, 6.0 Powerstroke Deisel, towing a mini-excavator weighing approximately 8,000lbs.
- Towing in Tow/Haul mode
- Turbo suddenly quits, drops Tow/Haul Mode
- Wrench light comes on
- Extreme loss of power
Turn off ignition for a second, turn it back on, turbo has reset, wrench light is gone. Process repeats itself every time we hit a slight incline. This happened periodically today, and then tonight on the way home approximately 30 minutes into the trip on the interstate at 70+mph, it happens again. Drop it in neutral, turn the ignition off, turn it back on, resets; 2 -3 mins later, rinse, repeat. At one point while going through this repetitive process, it sounded like something "blew," and we smelled a faint smell of either slightly burnt oil or somekind of fluid...almost like a burning rubber smell but not quite. Not overwhelming.
- After that, we basically limped it to a convenience store. It would go, but with very little power and on an incline would slow down to 5 - 10mph. Got out and checked engine compartment, no steam, no smoke, no leaking of any kind. Just a very loud "whirring/whistling" noise when you start it back up.
- No smoke coming from exhaust
- No check engine light or error codes
- We have already had the EGR situation and have had the bypass kit installed a few months ago.
So my questions are these:
1) If the turbo was blown, would the truck run at all? And would there be error codes and check engine lights?
2) What would be that loud, whirring/whistling sound?
3) What other things can we look for?
We have no problems with this truck except when towing a heavy load.
Input greatly appreciated, since we just spent $1800 on the EGR Bypass, or straightpiping or whatever you call it.
Thanks much!
