engine swap

I am getting ready to swap out the 86 302 I placed in my 52 F-7 some time ago with a 68 351 W engine. Anyone on here done this? I guess my biggest concern is once again the manifolds fitting.

I had to go with stock manifolds to get the 302 to fit and it just barely fit with those. The 351 has headers on it now but I am guessing that at the very best the headers will not work and will have to find a set of stock manifolds.

If that is the case any suggestions on particular manifolds would be helpfull. Thanks

Use your 302 manifolds they will fit.

The 351w is higher and wider than the 302. What is your interference point now? Do you have 1/2-1" to play with to the sides and just slightly above the manifolds now?

I dont have any interference at this point since the 302 is still sitting in there, plan on swapping out next weekend. The 302 Drivers side manifold is already real close to the steering box and I was hoping that someone could tell me what sort of problems I might run into.

I dont have 1.5 on the drivers side now with the 302 there, pass side probably.

Maybe someone can tell me if the engine mount ears are cast in the same spot on these two engines.

You say wider at the top, that dosent sound too good.

Good to know the manifolds are the same, thatll save a few bucks.

Talking Mounts

302 and 351W mounts are in the same place, makes them interchangable.

Wow it just keeps getting better, thank-you hot-wrench

Another user posted above about the 351 being higher and wider, can you give me some possible scenarios on what sort of problems I may run into considering this?

Not concerned with being higher, its the wider that has me shaking, thanks again

I can't guarantee these are 100% accurate. Do some measuring:

http://mustangsandmore.com/ubb/EngineDimensions.html

Page 47 here, measurements without manifolds afaik:

2012 Ford Racing Performance Parts Catalog Ford Racing

More of the same from the first link:

Ford V8 Engine Dimensions

The deck on the 302 is 8.206".
The deck on the 351w is 9.503" for later engines. Thus, the heads & exhaust manifolds are about 1.3" further out from the crank at a 45 degree angle.

If you have 1" or more clearance to the side and just above your manifolds now, you should be ok with a 351w. If not, time to rethink the 351w.

I have been told that the 302 versus the 351 manifolds were different in their port size and that I would be robbing the engine by using the 302 manifolds, I am not overly concerned with performance as the engine is going in a big truck but am I just creating an in-efficient dog by using these 302 manifolds.

No point in that so if I need to find a set of 351 I will do so but any opinions would be helpfull.

Again not trying for performance so much as the 351 is sitting in a very large truck that will do little more than the occasional trip to H.D or the dump. Thanks

The manifolds are not that different , in some applications the interchange calls for the same manifolds. You will not lose any performance useing 302 manifolds on a 351W. When swapping engines from 302 to 351 the main difference in width is about 1 inch. On one swap we angle milled the manifolds to clear the steering box.
