Looking for My Next X

Ok I used to have a 2003 X V10. I sold it about 2 years ago due to the high cost of gas and the fact I had to drive 60 miles round trip to work. Times have changed and I now need one again to tote my wife and 4 kids around. I have recently found a one owner 2005 X 6.0L with 200K for $15,000 and I have a few questions.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o>
· How long will the 6.0L last? Can I get another 100K out of it before rebuild/replace<o></o>
· Can I realistically get 18-20mpg on the interstate out of a diesel X<o></o>
· The obvious Question is $15,000 to much for this truck<o></o>
· Are the 2005 6.0L that much better than the 2003 6.0L<o></o>
· What items should I get upgraded/replaced first from an engine standpoint to make it last longer.<o></o>
I do most of my own work on my cars, within reason. Just need to make sure it will not kill me in repair cost of the next few years till I can afford another car. This forum is excellent and a great tool for doing grass roots repair.

- If it's got 200k on it and it's still in good shape it's either been well maintained and/or it's one that came out "right". Don't know if you can get another 100k out of it since I'm not there yet either.

- I got 17.2 mpg on my 640 mile trip between San Francisco and Anaheim last November but that was up the GrapeVine pass on I-5 in both directions so I suspect, with a light foot and flat terrain you could pull 18+ mpg if everything else on the truck is right and you're not hauling anything heavier than a couple of people.

- I bought my 2004 Limited 4x4 6.0L PSD for $15,500 w/135k miles on it last November but you'll have to figure out what the right price is for you and your region of the country.

- Don't know about the 2005 vs. the 2003 6.0L since I'm in between but I've heard they were making continuous improvements throughout it's production cycle.

Bullet Proof Oil Cooler: Bullet Proof Oil Cooler System, 2005-2007 F-Series, Condenser Mount
Bullet Proof EGR Cooler: BulletProof EGR Coolers

Or get them both as a set: Fully Bullet Proof 6.0L: Oil Cooler System and Bullet Proof EGR Product

Aux. Coolant Filter: http://www.dieselsite.com/2003-20076...waterpump.aspx

I'm also a fan of the high output alternator upgrade. This will make sure your FICM and the rest of your truck has good voltage: https://www.dcpowerinc.com/fit/2004~...07-250-xp.html

I would also get an Aux. Tranny Fluid Filter if you have an auto transmission but it's not strictly an "Engine" part: http://www.dieselsite.com/1999-20037...tersystem.aspx

AutoEnginuity USB PC scan/test tool: AutoEnginuity Scan Tool Software SP01/SP03/SP05/SP06/SP07 Ford/Chevy/Cummins

You want the SP03 "Ford Bundle" that supports the PSD sensors.

Change your oil and fuel filters regularly and you should be in good shape.

Good luck!

Keep looking, if you don't like that one. It took me a year to find my 05eb 6.0. Have your financing ready, when I was looking the good excursions sold quick.

Ok test drove an 03 diesel 178K miles for $14K Had 3 issues i could see

1. Front end shook when you hit about 60mph
2. Strange clunk in the rear end when you let go of the brakes from a stop
3. has an aftermarket exhaust but no sign of any other engine mods and no lights on for SES. Also check for signs of break controler and they did not exisit.

Am i crazy for looking at this truck or not. It was super clean on the inside.

I think you're going to end up taking a bath on a high mileage diesel.

Just to haul the wife and kids around all you need is a V-10 gas.
