tip for fuel gauge not working :-)

learnt the hard way if your fuel gauge doesn't read anything and you no longer have the auxiliray tank, flick the switch on the dash!!!! mine's been OS for a couple of weeks & was tracing the wire in case I needed to change the wire & add an inline fuse, followed the wire & found a spur to the switch, that's when I had a "DOH" moment, gauge now works fine laughed for 5 mins......

did feel a bit of a chump at least it's one I can cross off the to do list. mostly rust repair but not too much, the worst bit is top of bulkhead around wiper arm mount, real pig to get to.

drizzie27: The floor switch is to physically switch which tank is getting drained. The switch under the dash is for the gauge (to show what's in a particular tank, but not necessarily indicate which tank is the active tank).
Clear like mud, right?????

I've looked everywhere on my 71 250 and can't find a switch anywhere. I even took my cluster out too

I'm working from the 1967 wiring diagram manual, so hopefully it's the same for 71... Off the back of your cluster from the fuel gauge there should be a couple wires. One should be Orange, the other Black-Green stripe. According to my diagram, if you follow the orange wire, it should take you to the switch (if you have one).
Hope that helps...

Drizzie, I saw your other post about the wires being cut. The second picture you showed goes to your gauge and the orange wire should go to either a selector switch or straight to the sending unit on your tank. So as of right now you may not have a wire hooked to your sending unit which would explain why it's not working

yeah, that should run to your sending unit, my old wire ran above the door, but i ran a new one since i relocated the tank. you should be able to find the wire and trace it back to the tank.

so if thats the case, where is that wire supposed to be connected to? is it supposed to have a 90degree boot that slids on the back of a bolt like the cig lighter wire?

no it will hook to a post sticking off the sending unit on the top of your gas tank. you can use an eye connector and use a nut to pull it tight.
