Unhappy 38R + AC codes + AIS intake = not enough AIR

I've had a 6637 filter on the dually for almost 250k miles now - but after getting the 38R it has just been too noisy for my liking. Actually, I will describe the good 'ole 38R as downright punishing while towing with the 6637 filter in front of it. All I can say is those of you who WANT a louder turbo must not tow heavy for 12-14hrs at a time - because the added fatigue from this noise is very noticeable...

So, since the AIS will flow nowhere near enough air for what I have planned for the Excursion's engine build - I figured I'd throw it on the F350 and try to quiet down the damned oboxious 38R. IT WORKED!!! I had actually decided I would keep the 38R after my first couple of drives. Then, I realized I could max out the filter minder at will... No big deal I thought, it still easily makes 30psi of boost (FAST too!! ) and EGT's just are not an issue with the tuning I have now - so no big deal. Then I realized I added 1.5gals of oil between oil changes (usually I don't add ANY). (sucking oil out of CCV???)

I cut a 2" dia hole in the side of the box for a filter sleeve and it had zero effect - still max out the filter minder after a WOT event... I guess the AIS will be for sale, prepped for a 'fender sleeve' mod.

Meanwhile, I guess I need a recommendation for a 'closed-box' filter that will flow enough air!!!

....or a different turbo (or turbos!!! )

Make me an offer on ceramic coated Int'l bellowed uppipes and 38R with ceramic coated exhaust housing - only 30k miles on them.

Jason. I had the same issue with the 38r and 6637 but I like the whistle from the turbo. Didn't like the minder light so I went to the AFE big boost filter,I can still set the minder light @wot..the AFE is rated at 850 cfm..I believe Jody at DP is using a closed filter that rated at 1100 cfm,I am planing on getting that info on which one that is and trying it..

I experienced the same thing when I put my AiS on, five years ago. It turned out the filter-minder was the problem. I put the old filter-minder from the stock air box and it never pegged again. The AIS box was actually flowing plenty of air, the filter-minder that came with the AIS was faulty.

That sounds good Neal. But what about the extra oil he's using? I to thought the AIS was fine, some guys get over 475 HP with that set up and stage two's.

This is exactly what's keeping me from getting the 38R right now. Towing 8K lbs with the ported housing gets to be really annoying at times and I don't think it's nearly as loud as the 38R

What about a stock 6.0 intake?

Subscribing.
I am thinking of getting DP tunes, and the recommendation is do not use an AIS.
Too restrictive.
Towing a 12k 5th wheel, would like less noise also.

I thought about the oil and there could be many reasons he used that oil unrelated to the air box not flowing the air. I have never heard of an AIS box not flowing enough air.

What is the basis of your "...the recommendation is do not use an AIS. Too restrictive." comment? Just wondering where this comes from.

James from DP answered my questions about using AIS with tunes. He is who told me it is too restrictive. He mentioned (which I agree) it is designed for severe enviornments, ie very dirty.
I was ready to get one untill this came up earlier today.
For me, more research necessary.

I likes my AIS, although I am a ways from 450 hp! The quiter the better for me. I have got on mine some with the 100p and have not set the filter minder. Seems like the harder I get on it the quiter it is.

Joey, the AFE Big Boost (unless it's changed since I put one on my truck) doesn't have a provision for the filter minder. Did you modify it so you could install the minder?

Jason, I don't have an opinion other than that the 6637 is quite annoying when towing for long distances. So, if you decide to sell the AIS, I am interested. Feel free to PM me IF you decide to sell, no pressure.

I have the AIS and I get 27 PSI boost on my 60e & 80e without any difficulty - or popping the filter minder. I have had the filter minder pop with freezing fog -it's very likely the freezing fog plugged the filter.
