I had Ford Dealer adjust my steering once. He said the adjustment on top of the Gear box was a little too tight.
He said " The center position is the tightest position and it wanted to slip off center. He backed it off a bit and it did improve.
I know I am not making myself clear. but it was like the adjustment was pushing on a cam lobe of sorts and the straight ahead position was the highest on the cam???
That is just what I was told. May be something to it.

What is windshield washer fluid level??? Just kidding; I recently brought my fathers 2000 with 106K and went over top to bottom trying to fix that wandering feeling. My dad recently drove and was amazed he said it drove like new... I said it all over the place... He said you are just used to rack and pinion steering and this is the nature of the beast.
Hope you figure it out

I do not know this first hand but was told by a reputable friend who runs an alignment shop in town that lower ball joints can cause that too. He went into a long explanation about it but basically something about a wear pattern putting a weird spot in the ball of the joint. That results in you having to constantly fight it to put keep it straight.
It came up because he does all my front end work and I have a truck at work with the same issue. No movement in the balljoints but constantly fighting it to keep it straight.
I can pm u his business number and you can call him and get the first hand explanation if you want. I am picky about steering and he is damn good. I only had to take one back in 14 years of dealing with him and it was a 50 year old car that slipped the adjustment because of a burr.

X3 on the positive caster. Just like a bike, a laid back head angle will give you a nice "road bike" on-center feel while a steep angle will give you quick "sport bike" steering response. No idea what kind of adjustment is possible on a SD.
And my two cents on toe in; go ahead and dial in more toe than the book says, or right at the max allowed if you have someone with liability issues doing the work. Lots of people complain about the steering on these, and it may be because the specs Ford carved in stone are biased to other parameters than on-center feel.
