Finally got to tackle a small project

We had great weather today, temp around 60. Ive been wanting to take my spare tire carrier off to sand it down and repaint it since its getting pretty rusty. So i took it off and broke a few of the bolts (opps) lol. Sanded it down today but ran out of daylight to paint it, and the temp started getting alittle cooler so the paint wouldn't have dried right anyway, so that will wait till middle of the week when it warms up again. So anyone ever snap the bolts while taking these off before? if so whats the best and easiest way to take the rest of the bolt out? I took a few pictures to show the rust, ill post some of it after sanding tomorrow maybe... then post the after paint pictures when it gets painted

And heres my little helper, okay well she laid there and watched me lol

How much of the bolt is sticking out? If none then you gotta drill a small hole and try a reverse bit. If there is some sticking out, crap some channel locks and some WD-40 and go ***** to the wall. At least thats what i do

lol i was thinking the same thing, using vise grips and trying to turn them out. I didnt really get to see how much were sticking out, probably going to just drill it and trying the reverse bit anyway, thats pretty much what i was thinking from the beginning lol

heat, heat, heat.. find oxy acyt, or oxy/mapp is even good enough, it will make the studs come out soooo easily you wont believe it!

If you could handle the heat (DONT TRY IT) you could probably finger turn a cherry red broken stud out, no joke. Didn't have any clue as to how well it worked until I got some nuts off of my exhaust manifold.

This would be a pretty good idea (save for the finger twisting cherry red...) But i am thinking his bolts are on the body of the truck, that would burn the paint off ya? I am not completely sure on this cause i haven't looked at one recently but thats what it sounds like. If thats the case and WD-40 doesn't seem to work then try either PB or DP from sea foam (Deep Creep) I haven't gotten to experience how well DP works cause it didn't do anything with my track bar nut but i don't think anything would have gotten into that sucker. But it gets a lot of fans from here.

yeah, reverse drill bits really work.. edit: careful with stupid easy-outs though, they never, ever make a job easier for me!

and I found out with oxygen you can get an almost pinpoint flame to heat stuff, one that you can heat the stud/bolt and not touch the body at all. I had no clue how well it worked until I pushed myself to try it. Definitely an 'i win' button for loosening stuff. The biggest part that sucks is forking out the money for big, hard to move, dangerous tanks.. those little ones they sell only last for a few minutes and cost an arm and a leg in the longrun

Also, it will really hurt since if those were the mounting bolts they're a special size (9mm) and you will need to purchase them probably from a Ford dealer or parts store.
