Belt length/part # for smog pulley bypass

I dug up several old threads and posted in one of them to try and get a definitive answer on the length of belt needed to bypass the air pump pulley on a 1992 5.0.

I recently ditched the air crossover tubes and all associated piping/ vac junk and I want to now run a shorter belt. My pulley configuration has the tensioner up top between the alt and a/c. So I know I can keep factory routing.

What length should I go with and any suggestions on a brand? I'm up in the great white north, so I don't know if my options are limited. I'm running a prestone right now, which has been awesome.

Thanks guys!

Found a thread on a mustang forum that says an 84.5" belt would do it on a 5.0. Does that sound right?

Check out the pic in the second post...

Well mustanGs use a little different accessories on the front. But give it a try.
If you have your old belt just cut it and wrap it around and mark where it overlaps.
That's all I usually do.
Then get a belt and try it. Then if it's not enough tension on it get a little shorter.

Damn... the '91 stang belt routing and pulley locations looked identical to my f150.

I can always try the 84.5"... or does that sound too short?

I'm just thinking that the accessories are in a similar spot but thought the ps and ac pump had a different bracket. It could. E the same spacing though.

Does your truck have the tensioner up top between the alt and a/c or is it on the side between the smog pump and alt?

Heres what i do on trucks that have the high mount tensioner. Go to the parts store, have them look up the stock belt size. Then tell them you want on that is 2 1/2 inches shorter and go from there. This is with the stock routing

Awesome, I really appreciate it my man. I won't be heading down to the parts store until tomorrow afternoon anyways.

I tried measuring with a string by bypassing the smog pump, but I really had some trouble haha. Its raining out, I cut my hand on the shroud.... so I really botched it. Got around 88"

No worries buddy. I know how you feel. By the part number, I'm assuming belt length is 91.5" that you have? That's right around stock length, no?

Thanks so much man! Off to the parts store tomorrow. Never any slips or too much/too little wrap around certain pulleys?
