210K miles all smiles then BOOM!

Hey guys im just now coming out of shock!! A week ago i took my truck 08 450 job1 in the shop...it was blowing blueish grey smoke and ran like crap...3 codes were thrown....# 8 and #6 injectors and # 8 loss of contribution...it wreaked of diesel fuel as well....so anyway they told me to replace the injectors for $2500..# 6 and #8

two days later they are telling me that my truck is still have issues and it could have a hole in the piston or a broken ring...

They gave me 2 options they could do exploritory repair and take the head off and "maybe" find the cultprit...this would come with 12k mile warranty and could cost upwards to 8-9k or they drop a crate motor in it and i would recieve 2 years unlimited mile warranty for 15k

Now as many as you know I drive a cross the country going to to various oil rigs and power plants delivering supplies. I easily drive 100k mikes a year and clear around 90-100k a year after all expenses....

so i took door # 2 mainly for the warranty...it comes with new turbos egr cooler injectors HPFP etc...and all that is covered under the warranty.

So today they buttoned the truck up and took it for a test drive and the truck was running nice and strong but now the spedometer tops out at 40 miles a hour but the truck is clearly running at hwy speed. also the fuel gauge is messed up and not reading correctly.....

Anyway thats all I got.... and i hope this never happens to you

Tex

Tex, I'm sorry to hear that. Did they provide any explanation? I mean 210,000 miles is not a lot on a diesel. I think you made the right choice, that's a lot less than trading for a new or even a late model truck. If it makes you feel better I was talking to the guy next to me in the campground and he has 580,000 on a 2000 dodge. But, he's on his third engine. Truck still looks good and he says it drives good so why trade up. Funny, he said his new engine cost 15,000 dollars. Small world.

Check the connections under the hood for the pcm.

Or it could just be the VSS onto of the rear diff.

I would think pcm connection though.

It sounds like the over fueling from a stuck injector melted a piston or rings.

they said it most likely over fueled and it melted from there...i think i will keep this truck for awhile....like you said its so much cheaper to keep it than trade it in....hopefully i can get 300k on this motor before it happens again...then i will do it all over again.....but this time around im getting the gears reworked....3.73 most likley

Weeeeeoooo funny that almost every dodge owner has the same attitude. Don't matter if everything in the truck has been replaced several times, it's better cause its a cummins

For the PCM connection all you are doing is removing the connection. Check the pins and make sure none are bent or pushed in.

Needle nose pliers to fix and put it back together.

VSS I'd just clean the connection and put it back on.

Is i just me or with those codes why would the tech not verify the cylinder compression prior to replacing injectors in possible dead holes on an 2500.00 what to me sounds expensive hunch to the problem? I think you deserve some retribution on those cost, the tech's should be better than that.....just saying!

Switch to an Innovative tune. Way safe and much better power curve for towing.
