Fuel gauge adjustment after sender replacement

I just replaced the fuel pump/sender assembly on my 99 F250 5.4 gas truck. The pump had failed, and the new unit fixed that problem, but now the truck runs out of gas at just under 1/4 tank reading on gauge. The gauge was perfectly accurate before replacing the sender, and it still reads full when full, but is as if the float rod is bent down and the sender's pontentiometer never reaches the bottom position when there is no fuel in tank and float is all the way down. I knew this right away as I drained the tank when I removed it, and as soon as tank was re-installed, the gauge read 1/4 tank. In other words, the gauge reading is always about 1/4 tank higher than the tank fuel level actually is. Is there any way to adjust this other than bending the float rod up in the tank (where the float can still pivot to reach the bottom of tank when empty) and checking gauge after re-installing harness on an empty tank? I am also considering taking the accurate old sender off the old assembly and installing on the new assembly.
