tink25, i cant tell you 100%, but i have been looking into this also. Reading and looking on e-bay for various motors, it appears that the 1999- 2000- 2001 are probably 99% interchangable. There might be an electical plug that has a different end... THe 2002-2003-2004 motors are "the same" and "almost" the same as the older motor. We know there were improvements in the spark plug threads and some internal changes with piston slap- clearances, etc.. Reading different things i believe that a couple electrical pllugs might be different also.. Now the 2005 on are 3 valve motors with major differences. The 1999-2001 motors are called "L" as that is the 5th letter in the serial number. The 2002- 2004 motor is also called an "L".... I really beleive that buying a 2002-2003 motor is a good idea. I was thinking of getting one, removing the exhaust manifolds and clean/ replace gaskets and bolts. Maybe remove the intake manifold and replace the gaskets. Check the sensors and see if any differences in electrical plug in. If so, take the old sensor and put in the new motor. THen install. I can find NOTHING that leads me to believe there is anything sugnificantly different in the motor operation. I do see that some motors say "no EGR valve", so there might be some 5.4 motors for heavy 250-350 trucks that did not have the EGR.. im not sure. THis is no guarantee, but thats what i have found. It also appears the Expedition motor is "almost" the same. There might be a variation in the intake manifold on some. The photos i have seen of the EXP motor look the same as my 2001 F150.

here is an example of what i am looking at.. and the 8th digit should be L, not the 5th.. I am thinking about looking for a motor in the 100k mileage range for under $1500.

i just bought a f250 made in july of 2001, by vin it comes up as a 2002. i bought it with a horrible rod knock for a good price and i found a few used engines and just trying to figure out what will work out without to much of a headache. i know the factory engine has the PI cast on the head and its a 2v, no EGR and no cali emmisions. and 8th digit is a L. my question is will a 1999 5.4 work without much headache even if its a non PI engine? and also what will have to be done for a 2006 3v engine to be installed on the truck. i don't do much work with gas engines and have never owned a 5.4 so any help will be appreciated!

I bought an 03' to drop in my 98' as it's getting tired. After researching the differences in all the model years, you'll likely find more available with lower milage in the 03' to 04' heritage models. If your truck has an EGR valve find a replacement that does to, it will be more compatible. All the problems with these modulars were worked out by the time they got to 03' in the 2V engine. When inquiring about perspective engines, I would definitely ask for a compression check, about any leaks, and any history there is available on the donor truck to help you get one in good to excellent cond. Here is where I found mine: Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market Depending on how far you are from the chosen engine, they may ask for a core in return. This will play an important part in you selection because if they're a little too far away they may not request a return core because it will cost them too much to ship it back to them. Mine only cost $100.00 for shipping to my garage door.
There are some to choose from and you can call and ask about them. Even have them send pictures of the donor truck and engine or videos of it running. I did, it helped a-lot. I also did a CarFax on the truck I narrowed down to to give me more piece of mind. It will give you some history of service and possible accidents. Mine tested out an average of 185 psi avg. overall 8 cyls. I'll be installing it soon. I was told by most knowledgable people that you will need to swap everything that plugs in from your OE truck to the new engine block to be able to run the OE CPU or you'll have to switch the whole wiring harness and cpu form the donor truck. Tooooo much of A PITA to go that route. I would definitely go with aftermarket stainless steel headers and SS bolts to avoid future exhaust manifold broken stud problems as I have. Yours being a 99' there may not be as much difference. You can also look on RockAuto.com to check and see how may parts are the same between year models, very helpful.

swap on 99 f250 from a 00 expedition. 5.4L
i recently did a swap on my f250. at 180k miles it gave out on me so i looked around. i have heard that the expedition should work so i tried it out, since there was a deal on ebay. picked it up and started the project. everything bolted in fine and there was minimum differences. first was the intake maifold, on the expidtion was hard plastic but on the 250 it was aluminum cast. so i used all the parts from the f250 EXCEPT, the throttle body and the throttle body mounting. had to use the expedition on to make it work. Also on the intake manifold, there was a plug on the expeditions and on the F250 i had a what looks like sensor(which it wasnt) that connected the water pump pipe to the intake manifold. in the expedition it doesnt have the extra pipe coming from the water pump pipe so this so this is why you have to use the plug and the throttle body mounting. everything worked find, plug and play. havent drove it yet to test the horse power and the acceleration but i believe i read that that the expediton has 5 more torque then the f250 so i will try it out and post soon.

Do so, I can't wait to hear your results and any problems you might run into. I've got my replacement engine still sitting in the garage on a pallet waiting for winter to be over.
One of the hurdles I still have to find out is which EGR air tube to use with the 03' replacement plastic intake manifold and my new shorty headers that matched the OE 98' cast aluminum intake.
The other is the fly wheel. I've been told not to use the 98' and to use the 03' to marry the E4OD to the newer 03 5.4L? How'd it work out for you and what year replacement engine did you use, oh.... I see you used a 00' replacement. I went with the 03' because it has 30 extra HP being a PI engine opposed to my 98' non-PI 5.4L. I'm putting all new valve seals, gaskets, and crank seals in it before the drop in.
