Well two steps forward one step back.
I adjusted the timing and I think it looks good. At least it's good enough for now.
I then took my son and his friend out for a quick drive. I got the transmission in 4th for the first time. I'm guessing I got up to 30 mph, maybe. It sure feels faster when there is no body.

Well a little water was spraying, I got it into the garage and the block drain is now leaking. It has always been stuck, so running the engine finally loosened it up. I probably need to get a new one.
It looks to be part 8A-8115, now to find one of those. Well it looks like midfifty has one, it's cheap, but shipping will kill me. 1948-79 Ford F-100 RadiatLower Drain Valve Straight

Pull it out, carry it to a good parts store where they should have it in stock. Nothing special about it that I can remember.
Edit: Wait a minute. Try turning the "ears" CW. I think it appears to be open and probably the crud build up was keeping it from leaking.

Yep, it was in the isle at O'Reilly's. $3.00 and I'm off and running.
I like simple solutions. My wife mentioned again, that I should think about the parade in September, but we might be out of town. Of course I'm not sure I'm ready for it to idle that long either.

Hey Joe,
I hear you on the idling - It makes me nervous too! Shoot for the parade - nice to have a goal out there. It'll be fun!

Yep, it means I need to take it on longer and longer rides. I might be able to get stopped once with no penalties. I think I can work out a half mile loop close to home...

One thing I remember reading somewhere - "back in the day" folks always kept their foot into the pedal for a high idle at stoplights and such, for higher fan RPM over the radiator and coolant flow. Makes sense, I guess. Don't know how true that is.

That works many times. Quite common. With vehicle design now, it is all automatic. We don't drive cars and trucks, we just kinda occupy them and guide them.

Old vehicles had all sorts of overheating problems. Especially if someone left their fan shroud off. Like someone said before the engineers put just what was ended when our trucks were built; nothing more, nothing less.

That's interesting. Higher RPM's will heat up the engine more, but maybe the cooling effect is greater than the extra heating.

Turning on your heater is a good way to cool things down.....well outside the cab.

My throttle is currently a wire attached to the carb. So when I lift my right foot as I push the clutch in, for some reason it doesn't stop the engine from reving.
I'm glad I've driven it around a little the last couple of weekends. It's helping me track down little things as the engine is breaking in. And with the body off, I can get to everything easily.

Well good news!
I finally got the truck titled in my name today. With my wife's grandparents gone and the truck being off the books I was hesitant as to what was required.
So, I located the title and went to the DMV (Our local office has only one person). She fixed me right up. I didn't even need the death certificates. I also got to keep the original title.

It makes me feel so much better to have that done. Hopefully it won't be too many years before I can get plates for it.

Well over the weekend I cleaned and painted my air deflectors. I stuck them on last night for fun. This evening, my oldest daughter took my youngest and her friend to the County Fair this evening instead of me. So, I ran out to the garage and did a little mockup of one of my fenders.

I sure am pondering putting the body on in its rough shape while I'm waiting for money to come along for body work. Oh, I priced getting a new exhaust and it looks like it will only be $150 to $175 to get it done. I was expecting $200 to $300, so I might just get that done soon. My In-Laws really want to run it in the parade on September 20th....exhaust would be good to have for a parade. The problem is my daughter runs a college cross country race that day in Joplin. That makes for a conundrum. Since my father in law is 80 with heart issues, I think I had best do the parade. The truck was my mother in laws dads and my fil drove it a bit back in the day.

Looks good.

I say put the body on and drive it and paint it when you can afford it!

Have you got good cab mounts ( the rubber and nuts and bolts)? I think we could probably have the cab back on in short order. I see the cab in the back ground.

Cab mounts.....well I have the originals. I'm sure they are good for another 60 years. I need to get those ordered one of these days. I do need to get the cab moved before winter. My wife complains regularly about not being able to get her car in the garage. I will want to wait until after the parade though. The truck without the cab will fit the theme better.

Oh great! Now you have me shopping for cab mounts.
I wonder if this is worth the extra money: 1948-56 Ford F-100 Cab Mount Rear Custom Adjustable Bracket Assembly
But I'm wondering if this would be the best option: 1953-56 Ford F-100 Front & Rear Cab Mount Kit Adjustable Arms
That should fix my truck up...dang! You guys are enablers!

I'd try the original mounts and see if the cab sits square. If not then you can buy the adjustable rear arms. I've started using the heavy duty arms off the larger trucks. 1948-56 Ford F-100 Cab Mount Arm, Rear Cast
The F100 ones are pretty weenie.
