2012 5.0L vs 2011 Ecoboost (Drag Race video clips!)
(Disclaimer)
I know that racing is almost totally pointless in pickups, but I found these clips fun to watch none the less.
Hey guys...I came across these video clips on F-150fourm.com and thought you guys might enjoy seeing them.
(Both trucks according to the owners are stock, The only thing is the 5.0L has no Catlytic. The 5.0L has a 3.55 rear end and the Ecoboost rear end is 3.73.)
(The Trucks)
2012 F-150 XLT 5.0L
CrewCab
3.55 Rear end
4WD
No Catlytic converter.
2011 F-150 FX4 Ecoboost

Anyway...I enjoyed the clips as I do most compatition clips. It seems as though the driver of the 5.0L has better reaction time, which certianly helps. But if anything this shows how close the 5.0L and Ecoboost really are.

The Camra is in the 5.0L F-150...You can clearly see the (Ecoboost) badging on the door of the Black FX4 truck.

Looked like some pretty bad reaction time on the Ecoboost driver. I've driven both and know that unless the Ecoboost has issues or the driver is bad the 5.0L isn't going to put a whipping on one like that. The 5.0L isn't gutless but at the same time it won't pull away from an Ecoboost off the line either.

The 2 brothers racing post over on f150forums.com and their dad was the flag man. Don't worry plenty of people told the guy in the EB what he was doing wrong. He's used to driving a standard Mustang. They are going to try it again after he works on his launching skills. His reaction time was real slow and he didn't know what a boost launch was. It's all good they were all close races and fun to watch.

Owning a 5.0L FX4 F-150 myself I have to admit...The last video clip was the one that got my attention the most, It wasn't that, that was the only clip the 5.0L lost in...But it was the fact that when both trucks were launched properly the 5.0L still held on pretty damn good.
Now that I've seen a head to head of the 6.2L vs the Ecoboost AND the 5.0L...I can honestly say that all three engines perform quite closely.
Now if only someone would throw a 3.7L in the mix to see it would fare against its bigger brethren.

Pretty cool vids. The 5.0L does sound real good. The EB has enough lag to it that when jumping on the peddle from a stand still, the 5.0L will walk away from it. The 5.0L is eating up the competition, no doubt it will fair well against it's own.

If he cut the muffler off more likely than not he lost torque and made his truck slower. The stock system is better than most would think.

I know the 3.5L purist will keep bashing the 5L motor. But these vids proves that there really isn't as big of a differeance as people say. You know the ones that constantly say " I drove both and the EcoBoost makes the 5L feel like a four-cylinder Lol" Even with a bad driver if the Eco is as what some people say it is, should have been able to clean up that 5L. IMO the 3.55 gears in the 5L should have evened out the playing field in lieu of the "bad driver" in the 3.73 geard Eco.
I am now more interested to see how the outcome would have been if the 5L had 3.73's instead of 3.55.
BTW I am very aware that the 3.5L would have destroyed the 5L if they were towing say 5K each and doing the same tests. But for people that don't tow, these trucks are pretty damn evenly matched.
Another question, why did the 5L guy have the thing in 4WD? I've got 3.55 gears and LSD and my truck does not personally produce enough wheel spin from a dead stop (Then again I've never mashed the gas hard from anything less than a 10 mph roll) to creat a measurable differeance in a race. Just saying, the 4WD drag alone will cost you at least 10-20% in Hp.

Try turning the traction control off and mash the gas in even a 3.55-geared 5.0L from a dead stop. It will spin. I don't think the LSD will prevent that, especially with 3.73s.

Interesting results indeed.
Owning a twin turbo 300ZX myself, I know all about the need to ensure you launch "boosted." However, I don't agree with pro-turbo advocates who discount performance comparisons which may not put the turbo in the best light just because the turbo vehicle wasn't "properly" launched boosted and fell behind quickly: in real world situations when you need that power like yesterday you may not have the time or the engine may be idling or coasting so the turbo-lag is a legitimate issue that must be contended with.
Anyways, if reports are true that Ford has tuned the Ecoboost to their maximum reliable performance and will do everything to deter Eco owners from performance enhancements (e.g. Tuners) and will void all engine warranties if the slightest hint is detected of owner modifications, the 5.0L may seem the better choice for modders as its performance potential is much greater due to many more bolt-on options available.
Of course, if you don't care about factory warranties and are willing to pay-to-play, then anything is possible with either engine.
