1987 Kick Down Carb Linkage

I am working on a 1987 Bronco with a 351W and a C6 tranny. I got a couple of kick down rods off of some early 80's trucks with the same set up. The levers look to be too short to install correctly. I havent tried flipping it around to see if the other way makes it come out right somehow. I just cant imagine the kick down linkage being any different on my Bronco than it is on the trucks the linkage came from.

Any help, thoughts or suggestions welcome.

What carb do you have? Are you running a factory carb? Like with Holley they have a kick down extender for 4 barrel. We need more information.

It's an edelbrock 1406. It looks like it needs an extender of some sort. The lever looks to be about 3-4" too short. I did buy the throttle lever adapter, but, there was no kickdown lever extension of any kind with it. I need to dig around to see if there is such a thing for the edelbrocks.

I had a heck of a time finding the right kick down for my 460/C6 swap into a 73 F350. The edelbrock(Carter AFB back then) is a lot wider than the Holleys. I ended up using a Lokar kick down cable.

Edelbrock makes a kickdown extension for Ford applications when using their carburetors.

Here is what it consists of:

I keep getting my build put back b/c these little nickel and dime parts are MIA. Of course nobody in town stocks them and they are twice as expensive as ordering them from summit. However, Summit and Jegs is a week out on delivery with reasonable freight. Looking at the picture I decided this particular part wasnt going to be that hard to make. I was heading out to Gary Lewis's shop this morning in order to grab a part or two I was missing and finish the fab work on my spin on filter bracket.

So Gary and I looked the parts up on the web and decided to make a couple of them up at his shop. Gary , being the man of precision he is insisted that we make a detailed plan on his cad program. We had a selection of intake manifolds and carbs to use as mock examples. We concluded that the missing distance would be around 0.665". So we made one at those specs and we made one around 0.1250" longer. We used the same design as Edelbrock , but , put our own twist to it.The material used was 3/4"x1/8" hot rolled flat bar stock. We bored three holes in each extension . The smaller 0.137" hole in the rear is for a #6 sheetmetal screw that will key the extension in place as well as take out the chance of vertical travel. The second hole was for a 1/4"-20 tpi bolt that replaces the pin on the kick down lever. The third 1/4" hole was for the stud on the kick down lever where the original location for the lever was attached. After the holes were punched in them we media blasted the extensions. Then it was powder coating time with a nice gloss black finish.

It's raining really well and it's dark now so I will do the install tomorrow evening. I will report back with the success or failure of the DIY kick down lever extension.

DIY is always B E S T Specially if it was made in CAD. I dont even think the edelbrock real part was made using cad

Hi guys! As you might surmise, my name is Gary. And, I'm the amateur machinist to which Bruno refers. I hang out in the 80-86 forum, probably since at one time I owned or had in my possession 5 of the rascals.

Anyway, Bruno asked me to post a pic of the linkage extenders we made today. And, if one of them works out I'll be happy to post a pdf of the CAD drawing.

The kickdown extension shown in the plans was the perfect fit for the right amount of throw. The adjustment screw had to be tightened inwards about 1/4" and now the kickdown lever is timed with the secondaries on the carb. Whenever the pedal goes to the floor it opens the secondaries as well as kicking the transmission down a gear( I hope).

So I conclude with saying the .665" extension was just what the Dr. ordered.

bruno,
If you really want to be accurate, dimention all diameters from the same datum. The left edge would be datum A. Reference true position from that edge. Merry Christmas

Not Bruno's fault. I did the drawing, and you are correct. We did actually measure from the left end to make it.
