Which tranny in 88 F150?
Hi Everybody,
Just found this site, and it looks like a great resource. I've got a 1988 F150 Supercab with a 5.0 and an overdrive auto. It has 230,000 miles and is all original and still runs great. My question is this. Do I have an AOD or E4OD transmission? The shop manual I have says that the E4OD started in 88, but many other things I have read say 89 was the first year for the E4OD. The pan says METRIC on it in big letters, and the owners manual says 14 quarts for a fluid change, but I don't know if they mean just draining the pan. I don't see a transmission type designation on any of the stickers. I want to do an oil and filter change on it, and I want to be prepared before I start. Anybody got any input?
Thanks

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-02 AT 11:24 PM (EST)]The E4OD has the button on the dash (later models have it on the shift lever) and the AOD has an "OD" and a "D" position on the shift indicator in the cluster. Also, the E4OD has a LARGE electrical connector on each side pointing down to the lip of the pan.

Thanks for the info guys. It's pretty obvious that I have an AOD tranny. I've noticed lately that low RPM downshifts from OD to third when I ease into the throttle have become kind of jerky. I'm hoping that a fluid and filter change will help, since it's been WAY too long since it was changed. As I understand it, there are no adjustments that can be made to this tranny. Anybody got any tips or ideas?
