Which tranny in 88 F150?

Hi Everybody,

Just found this site, and it looks like a great resource. I've got a 1988 F150 Supercab with a 5.0 and an overdrive auto. It has 230,000 miles and is all original and still runs great. My question is this. Do I have an AOD or E4OD transmission? The shop manual I have says that the E4OD started in 88, but many other things I have read say 89 was the first year for the E4OD. The pan says METRIC on it in big letters, and the owners manual says 14 quarts for a fluid change, but I don't know if they mean just draining the pan. I don't see a transmission type designation on any of the stickers. I want to do an oil and filter change on it, and I want to be prepared before I start. Anybody got any input?

Thanks

The E4OD has a switch to turn overdrive off and on, since it is an electronically controlled transmission. AOD overdrive is controlled by the shifter on the column.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 04-Nov-02 AT 11:24 PM (EST)]The E4OD has the button on the dash (later models have it on the shift lever) and the AOD has an "OD" and a "D" position on the shift indicator in the cluster. Also, the E4OD has a LARGE electrical connector on each side pointing down to the lip of the pan.

Which tranny in 88 F150?

Thanks for the info guys. It's pretty obvious that I have an AOD tranny. I've noticed lately that low RPM downshifts from OD to third when I ease into the throttle have become kind of jerky. I'm hoping that a fluid and filter change will help, since it's been WAY too long since it was changed. As I understand it, there are no adjustments that can be made to this tranny. Anybody got any tips or ideas?

Yes, you MUST make sure the TV cable (the one from the throttle to the transmission) is adjusted, and Haynes details the procedure. Seems like I saw it on a website once, but Haynes will probably be easier to find.

The AODE also has the OD button the shifter lever. But it didn't come out until later.
