Dirty Oil after change......help
#2
Your past posts show this is 2001 7.3L Powerstroke Diesel so I've moved your question out of the New Member thread in the Super Duty forum and into its own thread here. Best of luck.

Drain the oil, replace filter. Add new oil and filter, along with a can of Seafoam. Start the truck and idle it for about 10 minutes, do NOT drive it. Shut down, cool down, change the oil and filter again. You should be good to go.
I perform this on ALL my vehicles when i get them, as I typically buy used cars and trucks. It has worked VERY well for me. You can use inexpensive oil for the cleaning, then the good oil for the replacement. Typically I will put in a high mileage oil for about 1000 miles, then swap to a full synthetic.
Good Luck.

The 7.3 liter has about 3 quarts of oil that doesn't come out when the pan is drained. About a quart in each cylinder head and about a quart in the HPOP reservoir. If you had really nasty oil, then those 3 old quarts mixed with your new oil as soon as you fired up the engine.
Don't add any additives to your oil unless it says it works with HEUI injectors. The injectors are sensitive to the type of oil so you might make it run poorly by adding something to the oil.
I'd just run it for a while and change it out at it's next interval. Once you get back onto a regular oil change routine the oil will look a little better after a change. However, it's fairly common for the oil to turn black pretty soon after it's run.

If the previous owner neglected the oil then it's possible that some debris has found it's way into the IPR valve and causing it to stick or function erratically.
Sometimes cleaning it will help but some people just replace it to be sure.
Pull the dipstick and look at the oil. Are there any shiny little flecks of brass colored metal in the oil?

First, DO NOT add Seafoam or Lucas to a diesel! BAD Ju-Ju!
Second, as previously stated, there is still oil in the HPO system, no real way to drain it all. I have found that a good synthetic will help keep it cleaner longer, but that's a personal decision.
Try unplugging your ICP, and check the plug/wires for oil in the process. If it starts/runs fine with the ICP unplugged, or there is oil in the plug, it probably needs to be replaced. Check the IPR as stated, also.

Where are you located? It would be good to see some data logging files. The data logging will give you a lil more info about the condition of some of the key components of your truck. Don't sweat the dirty oil for the sake of it lookin clean. This aint a gasser! I am curious about the p1211 it Usually occurs when a chip is installed or your having issues like Greg mentioned about the icp or ipr. One of the members may be close enough to give it a look. Many have literally saved thousands in repairs by joining this site. And has also cost them thousands once pms sets in! Powerstoke mod syndrome! Good luck.
