CAI question

I want to put the banks ramair on my truck but have heard that the 5.4 will run lean and require custom tuning to correct the lean issue. Does the lean issue occur with certain years or all?? I have an 07 and don't wanna mess up my engine!

2004 and 2005 trucks have a very strict PCM strategy. No questions asked, any CAI will throw a CEL and the truck will run lean

2006-2008 trucks have a more relaxed PCM strategy. Some trucks can run a CAI and no problems. I ran a Volant on my 2006 and never had an issue.


Personally I would do the "Gotts" mod and save your money. If you want more power, pick up a SCT Tuner and get it custom tuned. It'll be cheaper than that CAI, and it will do way more to get you power than a useless CAI

My shop guys tuned it for next to nothing. I have a specter CAI. it never coded once but i took it in to shop just to make sure it wasnt running lean. My mechanic said who knows what the trucks are coming off the ***. line at? Some may run lean out of the gate some may run rich. Henry doesn't sit at the end of the line and tune each one by hand to make sure they are all to his specs. Just Sayin

I was a bit of a debbie downer there

on the bright side, the good CAI's (Volant, S&B, Airraid) give you wicked under hood noise. My 5.4 3v sounded like a big block with the Volant.


but yeah, they are worthless for getting HP in and of themeselves

My truck is completely stock except for dual exhaust. If I do this so called "Gotts" mod/widen the inlet pipe, will I be able to tell any difference in throttle response or power. Or will it not be noticeable.

Really depends on the sensitivity of your butt dyno and how much your butt correlates sound to power.

I can tell you that a programmer with custom tunes will make a noticeable difference. Just eliminating the DBW lag (torque limit) will improve your throttle response.

Charlie's right. Eliminating the majority of the DBW lag was a vast improvement in and of itself. I did the "Gotts" mod and I couldn't notice any huge gains, but it might breathe better above 4k RPMs, but I'm rarely in that rev range. Custom tunes are worth every penny, if the tuner knows what he/she is doing.

If you shop around, you can save some money. I found a used SCT X2 for $170. $75 for tunes

My X3 was $169 brand new (couldn't believe it either), tunes were $50

Worst case, you pay full price for a tuner. You are still under $400 total. Most of the CAI's are every bit of $300.

Gearheads tune on my F-250 is just amazing. Who'd of thunk that a 7,000+ truck could scoot along that quickly

I know a few things about tuners. I had a 01 7.3 for about 5 years and over that time period, I spent quite a few dollars on tuners and tunes for them. I'm not really wanting to hot rod this truck too much, just give it a little more power.

I've never rode in an F150 with a tuner before, but all other gas powered vehicles that I have rode in with tunes on them didn't seem much different than stock. It may just seem that way to me because with diesels you can add 140hp with one flip of a switch.

I'm not trying to get crazy power, but if you guys say that these tuners are worth it, then ill definitely look into them.

In all honesty, you're only looking at a 15-20HP improvement with a reliable custom tune on a bone stock truck. You can expect more gains with a larger MAF, headers, exhaust and more advanced timing with the custom tunes...all at the expense of economy of course. As you said, it's nothing like a diesel with 100+ HP and TQ instantly. Also, this is based on a custom tune for 87 octane. Mike at 5 Star finds more power with higher octane, but I haven't yet tested my 93 Tune for the sake of loving it and then having to stuff premium fuel in the OX all day long.

For me, the changes to the trans are far better than the extra HP and TQ I may have picked up. Earlier shifts at light throttle coupled with a more aggresive converter lockup sure does help. My truck rarely comes out of 4th at cruising speeds above 55mph unless we're on a nice incline or I've gotta get on her good to pass someone.

The OX caught me by surprise last week. Had to nail it from a dead stop at a light to gain position before losing my lane...and the back end broke loose. Dry pavement. Early in the morning. It certainly made me pucker up a little

I've been looking at tuners, and I just don't think that $400+ for a new is the route I want to go. Just can't see paying that much for 20hp. I'll be in search of a used one in the 200 range.

To tell you the truth, I have too much other stuff going into this truck right now to be looking to spend more money on a tuner, but if I find one for the right price, then I could definitely splurge for it.

With my diesel, I had my chip custom tuned to my specific truck. For example, my tuner would not work on my buddys 7.3 which was almost identical to mine in upgrades. Is this the case with these tuners for the F150s or are they all pretty much universal?

Good tuners with custom tunes are NOT universal. They are specifically written for your hex code and objectives.

I've bought 5 used SCT tuners at the $200 range...sad I know. But at least they hold their value when you sell them.

With the 7.3, there are several PCM codes floating out there. If you have a chip for your PCM, it will only work on other trucks with the same PCM code. It happens, but hard to find.


Like Chandler was talking about, the biggest gain you'll get with a F-150 is mainly trans shifting. The 04+ F-150 suffers about 100-115 HP loss in the drivetrain. Custom tuning can cut that almost in 1/2 combined with free flowing exhaust, e-fans, and the trans tuning itself. The trans is a major power eater.

Kind of a question but...How much flexibility does the factory PCM have with respect to increased flow? Willit compensate for a freer breathing engine due to exhaust and intake changes with the stock MAF?

My impression about running lean was thqat they were usually due to outside air leaking into the intake tract downstream of the MAF. That's area where it could not make fuel flow adjustments because the additional air flow is not compensated for because it would go undetected.
