synchromesh fluid in a zf5?? lucas additive,?? or not

someone suggested i use synchromesh fluid in my zf5. it calls for synthetic atf, but would this be better? im leaning toward the syn. atf with a bottle of lucas atf trans additive. any one with any experience on this?

I have heard synchro mesh is designed for any manual transmission including the ones that call for synthetic ATF

it seems to me that atf is harder on syncros. ive been a little uneasy about switching from a conventional atf to a full syn. because of leaks

Being an Amsoil Dealer for 30 yrs., Amsoil has two ATF,s for the zf5, Synthetic Automatic Trainsmission Fluid (stock # ATF) & Torque-Drive Automatic Trainsmission Fluid (stock # ATD). As far as seal leaks because of syntheic's, If it's been serviced regularity you shoudn't have any problem with leaks using synthetic lubircants and Amsoil does not recommend using additives in there lubircants.

I put lucas in everything it's got a product for, even use lucas brand oil, but then again my uncle swore by it and taught me everything I know about trucks, and I haven't had any issues. Ole girl runs smoothly so I'm not complaining.

looked on amsoil web site. they make a synchromesh fluid and it looks like it is a 5w30 replacement for transmissions. does not have the high shear stuff that the atd/atf has. think iwill check into a gallon of atd.

I am also an amsoil dealer, and I use the torque-drive. The synchros that are in these transmissions were designed to be used with ATF... so use ATF.

old-rodder,
I just wanted to let you know that Amsoil has a Preferred Customer Program so you can buy at dealer/wholsale pricing.
Let me know if I can help.

NO. THe synchromesh lube is designed for the gm Getrag trans. because they have some type of fiber BS synchros. I have rebuilt some of them and they will smoke the new sync rings in short order with atf or gear lube, did one for a kid with a know it all dad that says gearboxes use 90wt. And they wanted me to warranty it.

t19 is designed for heavy oil, big toothy gears and big bearings and thrust washers They need some cushion so the heavy oil works.

ZF is designed for atf, I use syn and I used a bottle of lucas in it to quiet it a bit. worked well.
The other oil that is approved for them is "tractor hydraulic" ,not hyd oil but the wetbrake type. I have used it ,my best bud uses it in everything and has no issues, trans ,tcase, ps . Just not in the diffs.
Sorry for the long post but this opinion is from my 30+ yrs wrenching.
Do with it what you will.
