97 f350 460 exhaust setup
Hey guys been a long time reader of ford-trucks. i just got a super nice 97 with a 460 with 60k org miles (one badass wife!). im looking at putting a full eshaust on it. im pretty dead set on the L&L headers nickel plated. but i did have a few questions about how im going to setup the exhaust. here are my thaughts. i have searched for this but came up with nothing.
1) true duals: L&L headers 2.5 inch pipe to a spun high flow converter to a cherry bomb extreme muffler with 3.5 inch tips.
-thaughts about this should i run a H-pipe, how do the oxygen sensor work out with this set up? i am currently deployed and dont know if there are any in the first place but my guess is yes...
2) Headers going to a Y pipe (ethier dougs thorley or hedman headers) then running 3inch pipe to a cherry bomb extreme the have a dual outlet 2.5 inch pipe to 3.5 tips.
Which one of these will a be louder and sound better?
thank in advance guys.

headers
I would only run with Banks full exhaust system, spendy but well worth it. I've over 60,000 miles on the headers put on in '01. Their muffler is awesome, not noisy but very throaty. The heavy stainless construction has not cracked and I use this truck, a lot in 4 wheel drive pulling a heavy goose trailer with my farm. I raise beef and am always moving animals or hay distances. They've done their home work and don't just bend tubes to fit any and all. more or less kinda if you know what I mean. Take a look @ their website: Banks Power | Diesel Performance and Gas Performance Products.

First off, Thanks for serving.
You forgot to mention if the truck has an auto or standard transmission. This will make a difference. I have the hedman headers in my '96 with the 460. This set up is for automatics ONLY. I just swapped to the 5 speed standard and the crossmember sits right where the y-pipe goes Now I have to have a new y-pipe made.
On a side note, the headers did boost me an additional 2 MPG average I also have a flowmaster muffler right after the cat. That's about as far as I have gotten so far. Don't want to put more money into the exhaust until the engine/tranny go into the '71
The sound is great on mine. Wish I could have afforded the Banks system though. oldproudvet, How much did your Banks system cost?
After posting this I found out that the Hedman y-pipe may be modified to fit. I am waiting for a reply to my post here: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...headers-4.html

sorry it is an auto. i saw a few pictures of true duals on obs and i dont like how the pipe hangs down, my truck is lifted pretty high so it no worries on getting hung up on stuff i just would like it to look clean. i know on my 79 i have true duals and the pipe had to be ran around a crossmember too but it doesnt look bd at all ethier. thanks for the help guys. my reall concerns are with the l&l headers they say you need a 4 to 6 inch lift which i have more then that but if yall know what i mean i dont want pipe hanging down stupidly low. so my real quest is to find a 96-97 with L&Ls and see how they hang down.

I have been doing some research about true dual on our trucks im think ill get the doug thorley headers so that the drivers side header collector runs toward the pass. side, then from there ill bend so pipe and go under the crossmember to run true duals.
so now my question is should i run 3inch pipe or 2.5? ill be getting fake cats so i can pass visual inspection, which will run to two cherrybomb extremes to two tail pipes.
also with the o2 sensor, i have only one on my truck that is in front of the cat, theres not one behind the cat. can i get and extension like this Specializing in automotive interconnect and wiring systems because i will need to move the o2 sensor back to where i will ethier weld a bung in the H-pipe or X-pipe still unsure on what i want now probley the H-pipe for ease of install. so that my o2 sensor will read off both sides what do yall think.
should i install the h-pipe first, then fake out cats then the mufflers or should the h-pipe be between the cats and mufflers?
thanks alot guys for all the help!

Bump... just looking for some info on the placement ofthe o2 sensor and woundering if they can be moved from orginal postion to further back in to a h pipe ill be adding to the exhaust. is there any good rule on h pipe placement such as as far forward you can get it somewhere in the middle or right before the mufflers? thanks guys

2.5" is MORE than enough. Why waste your time and money on fake cats. Just buy some high flow ones and be done.
For the O2 sensor, That extension harness looks pretty good to get it into your H or X pipe.
Dont forget. a Gas engine needs pack pressure to run right. If not you can burn valves and loose your bottom end

ok ill go with 2.5 then. how well do highflow cats flow? the reason i ask is the fake cats are only needed for vis. inspection and they are only 35 bucks a pop, so i could save some money seeing how i dont really need cats i just need the look.
as far as back pressure goes im aware of the need of some back pressure, do you think ill need the high flow cats to get the right amount of backpressure or will i be alright with 2.5 pipe, h-pipe and cherry bomb extremes?
having the o2 sensor further away wont cause any problems will it i plan on doing maybe a 6 indh h-pipe and welding a bung in the center on the h-pipe and the h pipe will probley go behind the tranny crossmeber. sound good?
thanks

My 460 truck has a 3" High Flow cat and a 3" Flowmaster 20 series muffler. I dont have quite enough back pressure, because it will pop and slight backfire when compression breaking.
So if you are running dual 2.5" with no cats and glasspacks it will defiantly not have enough back pressure and backfire alot

I have a few 460 trucks.
I've run the banks complete kit on a manual Trans with stock cat. Freakin awesome.
I've run the l and l headers as well. Custom stainless exhaust all the way back. I used 3" mandrel bent pipe to get to the passenger side, then into two bullet cats (40$ each shipped on eBay from performancecurve) into a dual 3" inlet magnaflow and out 4" into a diesel catback exhaust.
Anyway
The o2 sensor only needs to be in one pipe. It's fine that way. Just lengthen the wires on the o2 sensor. That way the harness is fine in case manifolds go back on.
