Hello my my brother has a 73 highboy with a wore out 360 in it, i have a good 400 in the field we plan to put in it. i also have a 460 bell housing laying around, and i was wondering if a 460 bell housing will work on a 400, and if the 360 fly wheel will work.

the 460 and 429 share the same bell housing bolt pattern with the 351M and 400, so it will bolt right up. The fly wheels between an FE and a 460 or 400 are not the same. but a new 400 flywheel can be bought at just about any parts store, the 1s ive bought werent priced too bad either. as far as the rest of the swap if the 400 came out of a pickup you will need to use its motor mounts as they are different from a FE.

 

I'm going the other way, 400 to429. I knew the bells would interchange but what about the flywheels? will a 4oo fit a 429? not highjacking here just need some additional info.on these parts interchange. Mark

 

The 351m/400 to 460 swap has got to be the most common swap there is. Ive never heard of the flywheels swapping between those engines ive never tried that myself, ive just bought new 1s as the teeth were worn on the old 1s. What will swap between a 400 to 460 is starter, distributor, rocker arms, thermostat housings, and i think theres 1 more thing but i cant think of it right now.
